Child Support
Within a week after your case is filed the court will mail notices to all the creditors you listed on your paperwork. The court also imposes an "automatic stay" that mandates that almost all creditors must stop all efforts to collect any debts you owe. So, no more telephone calls, collection letters or lawsuits. Child support creditors can still continue to collect child support debts.
Spousal Support
Yes, almost all garnishments can be stopped except for child support or spousal support obligations. Some creditors that hold claims that will not be discharged like student loans can start garnishment again as soon as your discharge is entered.

Fraud
There is nothing in the bankruptcy laws that prohibit you from borrowing money prior to filing a bankruptcy as long as YOU INTEND TO PAY IT BACK. If you borrow money and do not intend to pay it back, it would be considered bankruptcy fraud. The bankruptcy code prohibits attorneys from advising anyone to incur debt in contemplation of bankruptcy. Unless that provision is declared unconstitutional, a lawyer cannot advise you to incur more debt. But, if you do decide to buy a car before you file your bankruptcy you may be required to reaffirm the debt in order to keep the vehicle.

A lot of people put their name on their elderly parent’s account “just in case.” This is usually a bad idea. If you want to be able to help mom or dad in case of disability or illness, a power of attorney is probably a better choice. I have seen a bank freeze a parent's account and then send all of the money to my client's bankruptcy trustee. The money should get refunded once the trustee is satisfied that it is not the bankruptcy filer's money, but it can take a while.
