Incontinence is common in the elderly but is also present in younger people. The fact that an aisle in most supermarkets is devoted to incontinence supplies and devices is testimony to the prevalence of this problem. There are several types of urinary incontinence, each having a different cause or etiology. In seniors (especially in women) urge incontinence or the inability to control the sudden urge to urinate resulting in very frequent voiding and leakage is seen regularly. It can be caused by neurological diseases (e.g.. stroke, Parkinson’s disease) or simply the aging and weakening of the urinary control mechanism. Most of these cases respond to medication and other treatments.

Kidney stones are hardened salt and mineral deposits which form inside the kidney. When the urine is concentrated, chemicals can precipitate causing crystals to form ín the urine. These crystals can aggregate and grow and eventually become a stone. A stone causes a problem when it obstructs the flow of urine from the kidney.

As you age, it is important to be aware of prostate health issues. It is recommended that men over 40 have an annual prostate exam and, at age 50, annual screening for prostate cancer using a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test.

Multiple Sclerosis
Most sexual dysfunction is caused by a physical problem. We formerly believed that psychological problems were the primary cause. More recently, sophisticated testing and research has shown that the majority of cases are physical in etiology. Causes of male sexual dysfunction include blood vessel disease, neurological diseases such as spinal cord problems, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and diabetes.

Ultrasound
When a patient scheduled for lithotripsy arrives at the Lithotripsy Center, he/she is greeted by the staff and anesthesiologist who will discuss the case and answer questions. He/She is then brought to the lithotripsy room where he/she is placed on the lithotripsy table. An intravenous infusion is started. Through this infusion, sedative drugs are given to make the patient comfortable and relaxed. The stone is then located by x-ray or ultrasound and then shock waves are delivered to the kidney stone through the patient’s back. These shock waves usually shatter the stone into small fragments. This treatment is very well tolerated and rarely requires more than heavy sedation.

This facility is equipped with the finest and most modern equipment available, including laser, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CT scanning, etc. For questions regarding hospital patients, we would appreciate one spokesperson calling during afternoon office hours.
