Cryotherapy
Most retinal tears need to be treated with laser surgery or cryotherapy (freezing), which seals the retina to the back wall of the eye. These treatments cause little or no discomfort and may be performed in your doctor’s office. Treatment usually prevents a retinal detachment.

If you experience abdominal pain associated with vomiting, abnormal bleeding, chest pain, severe headache, slurred speech, or weakness on one side of the body go to the Emergency Room or call 911. Please inform the ER physician of the medicine that you have received. As soon as possible inform your ophthalmologists of these problems.

Please make an appointment with your general doctor to get a physical exam prior to your scheduled surgery. We may need to obtain blood tests and/or an EKG prior to surgery based on your doctor’s recommendation.

Glaucoma
Neovascular glaucoma: Occasionally, extensive retinal vessel closure will cause new, abnormal blood vessels to grow on the iris (colored part of the eye) and block the normal flow of fluid out of the eye. Pressure in the eye increases, resulting in neovascularglaucoma, a severe, usually painful, eye disease that causes damage to the optic nerve and can lead to total blindness.

Dr. Steinmetz was born and raised in Iowa and will always be a Hawkeye. His undergraduate degree is from Luther College and he attended medical school at the University of Iowa. After an ophthalmology residency in San Francisco and a vitreoretinal fellowhip at UCLA in Los Angeles he went to London, England for a medical retinal fellowship. He held academic positions in Essen and Bonn, Germany before joining Southern Vitreoretinal Associates in 1993. He is married and has 2 children. He enjoys traveling, reading and exercising in his spare time.

Laser Eye Surgery
Vitrectomy is a type of eye surgery that treats disorders of the retina and vitreous. The retina is the light-sensing tissue found lining the inside back part of the eye. The vitreous is the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the eye. The vitreous is removed during vitrectomy surgery and usually replaced by a saline-type solution.
Cataracts
Risks of vitreous surgery include infection and retinal detachment, both which are treatable. The most common risk, however, is cataract development. Cataracts usually occur rather quickly after a vitrectomy, but they can be removed once the eye has healed.
Cataract Surgery
The vitreous is the clear gel that occupies about 80% of the inside of the eyeball. The vitreous is composed of thousands of strands of collagen, similar to the fibers in cotton. As we age, this jello-like substance liquefies, shrinks, and eventually separates from the optic nerve and the retina in the back of the eye. This is called posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and occurs in most adults between 40 and 70 years of age without untoward consequences. A PVD may occur in younger individuals who have undergone cataract surgery or are very nearsighted.
Eye Exam
Your eyes may seem fine, as often there are no warning signs of diabetic eye disease. Having a full, dilated eye exam is the only way to know for sure if diabetes is affecting your eyes. The eye exam helps your doctor find and treat eye problems early, often before much vision loss can occur.

Dr. Willingham grew up in LaGrange, Ga. He obtained his Bachelors degree in biology from LaGrange College. While in college he meet the love of his life and they now have two daughters. Between college and medical school he did a year of graduate studies and participated in research in pharmacology at the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta. From there, he obtained his M.D. from Mercer University in Macon, Ga. Dr. Willingham then finished a year of Internal Medicine and an Ophthalmology residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, in Jackson, MS. After that, he completed a two year medical and surgical fellowship at the prestigious Charles Retina Institute, in Memphis TN. In 2004, he joined Southern Vitreoretinal Associates and practices in the Panama City office. When not in the office Dr. Willingham takes advantage of the awesome area where he lives. He enjoys paddle boarding, boating, fishing, diving, reading, and spending time with his family.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
