The FDA banned the use of silicone implants filled with silicone gel in 1992 because of the possibility of silicone gel stimulating autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and others). The FDA decided to further investigate implant safety and effectiveness. However, they allowed the use of saline-filled (salt water) implants. Since then, there have been hundreds of studies of the risk and as a separate trial managed directly by the FDA. A large study of women with and without breast implants conducted at the Mayo Clinic showed that autoimmune disease occurred with the same frequency in all women regardless of silicone implants. It is not known what causes autoimmune diseases, seen in middle-age women.

Medical Weight Loss
Abdominoplasty, or a “tummy tuck” recreates a more youthful and attractive abdomen. Loose skin is tightened, stretch marks are removed, and the waist is narrowed. Tummy tuck is appropriate for women who have excess, lax skin due to distension of the abdomen after pregnancies or who have had major weight loss.
Emergency Care
Your safety is my highest priority. A vital part of our service is being available for any emergency that might arise. If you have an extreme emergency you should proceed immediately to the nearest emergency room or call 911 as you deem appropriate, then have someone immediately notify Doctor Kaplan. Please explain your problem to our receptionist or on the phone message.
Electrocardiogram
Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are on any medication (i.e. heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc. Please assist us by providing any X-rays, blood tests, EKG or other tests if applicable. Also provide a list of medications you are presently taking. IMPORTANT: All patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at this consultation. In addition, we will discuss the postoperative care and issues such as driving, return to work and social life.

Brow lift surgery has 3 variations: minimal incision endoscopy, coronal scalp incision, and forehead and hairline incision. These methods vary in the position and length of the incision and the effect this has on the height of the forehead.

Ear Surgery
Ear surgery is commonly performed during childhood. The surgery can easily be performed with local anesthesia, but with children under 7 years of age a general anesthetic may be required.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Kaplan combines his experience, surgical judgment, technical expertise and ethics in order to achieve the goal of providing aesthetic improvements for all his patients. Dr. Kaplan is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and certified by the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Plastic Surgeons

Botox
Botox and Dysport flatten wrinkles and depressions caused by muscle activities. Crow’s feet eye lines, frown lines of the brow, forehead furrows, lip wrinkles and cheek laugh lines can all be improved with a single treatment. Botox and Dysport are chemicals derived from the botulinum bacteria that have the can immobilize a muscle for several months. The results are not permanent and can be repeated as desired to retain the improvement. Repeated use of the injections may lead to a longer duration of each treatment’s effect.
Brow Lift
This method uses 2 very small incisions hidden in the scalp. Specialized endoscopic equipment with a fiberoptic light source attached to a high power video camera transmits the image to a TV monitor.
Eyelid Surgery
My office is used for minor surgeries of an hour or less. Office surgeries are always local anesthesia, and pills are used for mild sedation. Examples may be: small liposuctions, eyelid surgery, otoplasty, scar revisions.
Liposuction
Liposuction is a common, popular procedure that achieves permanent removal of excess fat that has remained after adequate diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. The hips, thighs, abdomen, arms, knees, ankles, face and neck are the areas appropriate for liposuction. Liposuction cannot correct body contours that caused by muscle or excess bunched skin. To maintain the safety of the procedure, there is a limit to the volume that can be removed at one time. Large volume liposuctions are done using general anesthesia as an outpatient in a surgical center. Small areas can be treated with local anesthesia in the office.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation enhances the size and shape of small or drooping breasts. An implant is placed behind, not in, the breast. There are numerous options regarding type and size of implant, position of the implant, position of the incision, and type and size of implant.
Breast Reduction
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty is for a woman with very large, heavy breasts. The goal is to give the woman a more attractive contour with smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body. She will also benefit from easier fitting of clothing, lessening of back problems, an improved self-image and better and more comfortable exercise capability.
Breast Lift
Lifting of the breast by skin excision mastopexy and an implant may be needed for women who have small and very droopy breasts. Breast lift and breast enlargement with implants can be done as either one single stage or as two staged procedures.
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is often requested by Asians, Hispanics or blacks to create a narrower raised bridge and tip. The bridge of the nose and the tip of the nose are treated separately...
Breast Reconstruction
Hospital surgery is rarely needed. The exceptions are for patients with significant health problems that require post-surgical monitoring, or when postoperative care requires intravenous fluids or medications. Examples may be: cleft palate, breast reconstruction.

Face Lift
Face lift rejuvenates the cheeks, jowls and neck. The improvement occurs because of lifting of the deep tissues (cheek fat and neck muscles) and the skin.
Neck Lift
Neck lift is best achieved as part of a face lift. However, some patients may need direct surgery on the neck to remove and tighten the neck and not just lifting Individuals with very full necks, extreme excess of neck skin or drooping bands of muscle may require platysmaplasty, cervicoplasty or liposuction directly on the neck instead of or in conjunction with face-neck lift.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty creates more youthful eyelids by re-positioning the skin, muscle and fat of the upper and/or lower eyelids. These surgeries are highly individualized because of differences in eyelid form, ethnic differences and individual aesthetic preferences.
Abdominoplasty
The skin and fat of the lower abdomen is removed and the abdominal wall muscles are tightened. The result is a narrower, flatter abdomen. The upper abdomen, waist and hips may require liposuction at the same operation to achieve overall symmetry. The result is a narrower, flatter abdomen. Abdominoplasty is performed using general anesthesia at an outpatient surgical center. You may choose to have stay in a hospital.

This ambulatory surgery center is state licensed and Medicare approved and has specialized instruments, and equipment for plastic surgery. Most importantly there is a dedicated full-time nursing staff with extensive experience in plastic surgery. Examples include: face lift, breast surgery, large liposuction, tummy tuck.
Otoplasty
Otoplasty is commonly referred to as “ear pinning”. This surgery changes the shape of the cartilage of the ears so that the ears are less prominent. Ears are quite variable in shape and size but rarely attract attention. However oversized, distorted or protruding ears can distract from facial appearance. Children in particular are susceptible to this problem and are often teased and called “Dumbo” or other derogatory terms. An incision is made behind the ear and the cartilages are repositioned with incisions and suturing or are removed.

Lesions
About 1 in 1,000 children are born with birthmarks every year. Some of these birthmarks are brown-black colored because of pigment containing cells called melanocytes. These lesions can be small spots or giant size that cover all or part of the face or other parts of the body. Some of these lesions may have potential to develop in to cancer and should be checked and may need to be removed early in infancy. They do not spontaneously go away and if they are large and unsightly should be surgically removed.
Chemical Peels
A skin rejuvenation program is often used in conjunction with either chemical peels or laser wrinkle removal to reduce the fine wrinkles of the face, lighten areas of hyperpigmentation

Microdermabrasion
These procedures are relatively superficial and not as permanent as a laser. Light peels are most effective when repeated as part of a regular program. These peels are usually achieved with glycolic acid, trichloracetic acid, or a mixture called Jessner’s solution. Light peel can also be achieved with microdermabrasion (a fine spray of sand). Microdermabrasion can be combined with light chemical peels.
