The Palm Desert Police Department serves under a contract with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. It provides a variety of law enforcement services. The department s patrol division responds to emergency and nonemergency calls. Its patrol deputies handle the initial investigations of theft, burglary, robbery, assault and other felony cases. The department offers the Explorer program, which provides opportunities for young people to obtain knowledge and experience of a career in law enforcement. Its commercial vehicle unit focuses on commercial vehicles that are overweight and carry improper loads on the roadways. Additionally, the department s traffic team routinely conducts traffic safety checkpoints in various areas of the city to bring public awareness of the dangers involved in driving without seat belts and other safety violations.
