Dental Examination
Over-the-counter mouth rinses can help to fight bad breath, remove loose food particles after brushing, and freshen the mouth. However, mouth rinses are never a substitute for brushing, flossing, or regular dental examinations, and may disguise warning signs of periodontal disease.

Oral Cancer Screening
Dr. Don and Dr. Dan Stoner volunteer each year at the New Kensington Clinic on the annual day of free dental and medical care. Dr. Don and Dr. Dan Stoner also have helped the Dental Society of Western Pennsylvania provide free dental screenings at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. Oakmont Dental Associates provides free oral cancer screenings year round by appointment at their office. Each year Oakmont Dental Associates provides limited free care for low income handicapped patients through the Donated Dental Services Program. For Children's Dental Health Month, Dr. Dan and Dr. Don Stoner have visited Tenth Street, Verner, Redeemer, and St. Irenaeus schools providing dental health lectures, movies and toothbrush kits.

Teeth Cleaning
Regular dental cleanings, performed by a registered dental hygienist, are a crucial part of preventive dental care. By removing plaque and tartar, your oral health is enhanced and your risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease are reduced. Your dental hygienist will utilize manual instruments to remove moderate plaque and tartar buildup, or an ultrasonic device to scale away heavier buildup. The cleaning is finished with polishing, a pleasant procedure that cleans the surface of teeth, removes stains, and leaves the mouth feeling clean and refreshed.
Fluoride Treatment
Dental Sealants
Many studies have been done to determine if BPA in dental composite presents a health hazard. None of the studies has found dental composites to be a health hazard. The American Dental Association has tested the blood of dentists who had sealants on their teeth and those who did not. BPA was not found in any of the blood samples from either group. The ADA has stated that BPA in sealants and composites does not present a hazard to either dentists or patients.

Fillings
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on July 28, 2009, issued a final regulation clarifying the safety of dental amalgam (silver colored fillings). They classified dental amalgam as a Class II medical device (moderate risk). This is the same classification given to porcelain, gold and dental composite (tooth colored fillings). The FDA clarified its findings as follows, "While elemental mercury has been associated with adverse health effects at high exposures, the levels released by dental amalgam fillings are not high enough to cause harm in patients.â€ Over the past six years, the FDA has taken many steps to assure the classification of dental amalgam is supported by strong science. In all, the agency considered some 200 scientific studies.
Resin Composite
An article, 3 Tests and Treatments to Avoid, was included in the September 2015 issue of Consumer Reports, On Health. Anthony Pizon, chief medical toxicologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, warned about unscrupulous health care practitioners who recommend removing dental fillings containing mercury. "Fears and recommendations are often based on little solid research and go far beyond what science warrants,â€ says Dr. Pizon. Consumer Reports, On Health states says, "the Environmental Protection Agency and Federal Drug Administration concluded that the amount of mercury in dental fillings isn't enough to harm adults or children ages 6 and older.â€ The bottom line conclusion, "It's fine to have a filling removed because it is loose or before other dental work. And if you don't want a mercury filling, it's ok to ask for one made of ceramic or composite resin. But there's no reason to have an existing filling removed just to avoid mercury.â€
Veneers
Customized, wafer-thin veneers (also called porcelain laminates) are cemented directly onto the front of the tooth, resulting in a natural appearance that covers any irregularities or aesthetic concerns.
Crowns
Crowns can be made of porcelain, Zirconia, gold or a combination of these materials. All porcelain crowns maintain the aesthetic appearance of teeth by covering the entire visible surface of the tooth, while adding significant reinforcement and protection to the tooth. Porcelain crowns are extremely natural looking, virtually indistinguishable from other teeth, making them an ideal choice for visible teeth. Gold crowns covered with fused porcelain offer more strength while maintaining a beautiful appearance. All gold crowns are the most durable, pose no risk of chipping, and therefore are useful when crowning back teeth that are not very visible. After removing all areas of decay, your Oakmont Dental Associates dentist, Dr. Stoner, will take an impression of the tooth to be crowned and send the impression with a detailed prescription to a local dental laboratory where a certified dental technician creates the crown.
Bridges
Porcelain or Zirconia fixed bridges can improve chewing and aesthetic appearance, restoring the smile with a more permanent solution than dentures. Bridges replace missing teeth with artificial teeth. Your Oakmont Dental Associates dentist, Dr. Stoner will prepare the teeth adjacent to the gap where a tooth is missing, take impressions, and then send them to a local dental laboratory where a certified dental technician will prepare a customized bridge. The bridge is then cemented into place, restoring the attractive natural appearance and function that had been missing since the tooth was lost.

Root Canal Treatment
After graduating from The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Don Stoner served in the U.S. Navy at Orlando Naval Hospital and Training Center where he rotated through training in Oral Surgery, Prosthodontics and Endodontics.

Deep Cleaning
Periodontitis will require more aggressive treatment. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) may be recommended which involves the removal of plaque/calculus below the gums. For your comfort, anesthesia is used and the procedure is broken up into 2 (or more) visits for the deep cleaning itself and a final polish visit where we remove any residual stain and check for persistent areas of inflammation.

Dentures
Dental implants are the most realistic tooth replacements available. Implants begin with a surgically placed post that is securely anchored into the jawbone. The bone surrounding the anchor will heal in approximately six months. With a completely solid and stable anchor point, an artificial tooth is then installed. The end result is a new artificial tooth that is virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth, both from an aesthetic and functional standpoint. In cases where several teeth are missing, dental implants can also act as the teeth to which bridges are fixed, again perfectly mimicking the function of healthy, natural teeth. When many teeth are lost, two or more single implants can act as the support for complete or partial dentures.

Implants offer stability because they fuse to your bone. Integration of the implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural and some people find the secure fit more comfortable than conventional substitutes.

Tooth Extractions
Modern dentistry makes routine tooth extractions relatively comfortable, painless procedures. For seven days after the extraction, your tooth socket will require some care. You will be instructed by your Oakmont Dental Associates dentist, Dr. Stoner, to steer clear of the empty tooth socket when brushing your teeth. Some bleeding can be expected, and pain medication may be prescribed for residual discomfort.

Gingivitis is easily treated with a professional cleaning (prophy) and proper home care to remove the plaque before it becomes calculus.
