If you notice unusual pain after engaging in sports or an athletic activity, an injury screening may be in order, and we offer them at no charge. We can assess your injury, offer advice, and if necessary, refer you to a physician. A common misconception about pelvic physical therapy is that all it consists of is Kegel exercises. While pelvic floor muscle exercises are very important, they are only one very small piece of the care provided by pelvic floor physical therapists. Other treatments utilize neuroscience, knowledge and adjustment of posture and body alignment, behavior retraining, down-training techniques, relaxation techniques, manual therapy including myofascial release, scar tissue/adhesion mobilization and release, bowel and bladder retraining and much, much more. Which treatment is used depends on the specific needs of each patient. These treatments are used as part of a team approach along with OBGYN, urology, urogynecology, gastroenterology, family practice and nurse midwives among many other types of providers, to provide patients with appropriate, comprehensive care.
Emergency Care
A Sports Credentialed Specialist is a Physical Therapist who has completed at least five years of practice, 2000 hours of direct patient care in the area of sports physical therapy as well as a course in CPR and emergency care. In addition, the Physical Therapist must pass an examination administered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. They must re-certify every 10 years to keep current on trends relating to the specialty.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This referral pain can lead to secondary dysfunction such as carpal tunnel, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, decreased mobility, chronic pain and a range of other disorders. These scenarios can be difficult to treat because the true source of the problem is “hidden” and undiagnosed. For these patients, standard treatments are often ineffective resulting in continued limitations and chronic pain.

Ultrasound
A Physical Therapist is a health care professional who evaluates and treats people with health problems resulting from injury or disease. Physical Therapists assess joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, as well as performance of daily living activities. Treatments vary based on the practice setting but include therapeutic exercise, cardiovascular training, joint mobilization, modalities such as e-stim, ultrasound and home exercise programs. Physical therapists typically complete an undergraduate program of study prior to acceptance into an accredited Physical Therapy program. Most programs require three years of further training.

She attended Northeast Community College where she earned her Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant degree and soon after joined the Norfolk Physical Therapy team in 2014. Her areas of interest include sports rehabilitation, geriatrics, and general orthopedics. Alison has continued her education by recently becoming certified in Kinesiology taping. Her goal in the clinic is to create a relaxed and enjoyable environment while providing quality care to her patients. Ali and her husband, Jesse, have lived in Norfolk since 2014. In her spare time she enjoys being outdoors, spending time with family, and napping.

Pregnancy can cause many changes in a women’s body. These musculoskeletal changes can be uncomfortable, painful, and confusing.
