The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a philanthropic nonprofit institution, was established in 1934 by Alfred Pritchard Sloan, Jr., then President and Chief Executive Officer of the General Motors Corporation. The Foundation's programs and interests fall into areas such as science and technology, standard of living and economic performance, education and careers in science and technology, selected national issues and the civic program. Each program is assigned a program director. The total assets of the Sloan Foundation have a market value of about $1.5 billion. Historically, officer grants have ranged from $500 to $45,000 (the maximum allowed), with very few toward the upper end of the range.
