Sankofa Community Development Corporation serves as a catalyst to revitalize New Orleans' Lower and Upper Ninth Ward communities. The 501c3 non-profit organization serves residents of the area by addressing the social determinants of health, supporting diets rich in fruits and vegetables, and helping to decrease cardiovascular risk factors. Sankofa CDC works to increase access to fresh healthy produce and educate residents about the importance of growing and consuming healthy foods.

Services/Products

Sankofa Farmers Market was established to satisfy a need for healthy produce in New Orleans’ underserved and low income communities. It is the only open-air fresh market in the Ninth Ward area within a five-mile radius of the Treme, Seventh Ward, Faubourg Marigny, French Quarter, Gentilly and Mid-City neighborhoods. Founded in 2010, the Farmers Market continues to grow with new vendors and products, including seasonal produce, fresh herbs, starter plants, eggs, seafood, tofu, artisan breads, baked goods, prepared foods, and food trucks.

The Sankofa Farmers Market is held in the front yard of ARISE Academy at Dr. Charles Drew Elementary School, on St. Claude Avenue between Pauline and Alvar Streets, every Saturday from 10:00am until 2:00pm.
