General Info
Program: The Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center has a capacity of 100 children, ranging in age from six weeks through kindergarten. The Center provides a warm and supportive environment in which each child can develop and grow. The program is based on the belief that while human development progresses in a predictable sequence, each individual is developmentally unique. Activities enhance and challenge all areas of development -- physical, social, emotional, and intellectual -- at each stage of development. The curriculum and teaching are adapted to each child's individual abilities and interests, and activities are introduced when children are best suited to master them. Parents are welcome at the Center throughout the day to feed or visit with their children. Mission: The Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center is committed to growth in our understanding of each child's individual physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. We strive to provide a quality early childhood experience that encourages cooperation, communication and social competence for all children, We recognize that the entire family comes to the care center and families are partners in this commitment. Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center offers opportunities that will permit children to leave our center with a belief and trust in themselves, their caregivers and in their ability to master their environment. Our mission is to cultivate children who are active learners, willing to explore, take risks and meet the challenges of their future. Infant and Toddler Care: Developing basic secure and trusting relationships is the primary task for infants. Teachers foster this trust through frequent physical contact, sensitive responses to infant signals ( cries and smiles ) and mutual delight in interactions. Infants are provided visual and tactile stimulation and opportunities for gross motor activity. Daily activities for toddlers include experiences such as simple art projects, dramatic play, and free play that encourages manipulation, imitation, and exploration. Social skills such as empathy, caring, and sharing are also emphasized through interactions with warm, responsible, and encouraging caregivers. Pre-School: The pre-school program balances structured activities that allow children to learn new skills with free play that fosters creativity and individual expression. The curriculum incorporates experiences such as dramatic play, blocks, puzzles, books, art, science, math and outdoor play. Social skills such as negotiation, cooperation, and communication are encouraged and modeled by a sensitive, caring staff trained in early childhood development. Kindergarten: The kindergarten provides a twelve-month, full day program with focus on skills for social competence along with providing academic opportunities at a pace that allows each child to reflect on their learning. Teacher / Child Ratio: The infant and toddler rooms have a teacher-child ratio of at least 1 to 3. The pre-school teacher-child ratios are 1 to 4 for under three years old and 1 to 5 for three year olds through kindergarten. Full-time Care: The Phyllis Bodel Childcare Center offers year-round childcare following Yale School of Medicine calendar. To facilitate the development of trusting, stable relationships with others, all teachers at the Center work full days, five days a week. Children do not experience shift changes during the day, and parents can talk to the same teacher when they dtop their children off and pick them up. The Center is committed to remaining open in inclement weather to allow parents to meet their professional responsibilities. Hours of operation are 7: 30 am to 5: 30 pm. Part-time and Short-term Care: Part time care is available for children to come for two or three days a week. Places are sometimes available for short-term care ranging from one day to eight weeks.
