Professionalism

This vet is the first one that my dogs go to without a struggle. Dr. Loula is great with them, and even after one of them having surgery there and having to stay overnight, she still goes in without a big commotion. Also, with all the great care we get there, they still have among the best prices in town. They are well out of my way, and I pass seven veterinary clinics on the way, but I think that they are worth it!

Preventive Care

Vaccination
Sheep and goats require only minimal vaccination under most circumstances. Vaccination using a clostridium perfringens C&D + tetanus toxoid vaccine or 8-way clostridial vaccine + tetanus (Covexin 8) in kids/lambs and adults is recommended using the following timeline as an example.
Nutritional Counseling
Sheep and goats under most production systems in Missouri are subject to heavy exposure to internal parasites. Small ruminants are more susceptible to internal parasitism when compared to other species and resistance to available dewormers is becoming widespread. ‘Worms’ (primarily Haemonchus contortus - called the barber pole worm), represent the greatest threat to successful and profitable small ruminant production. The barber pole worm attaches to the lining of the stomach and feeds on the blood of the host resulting in poor production, weight loss, anemia and possible death.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Previous experience has proven that relying solely on the use of chemical dewormers to prevent overwhelming parasitism in small ruminants is a recipe for failure. Resistance to various deworming products has become widespread and on some farms no dewormer is effective. Other techniques for combating internal parasitism must be implemented into the herd management plan and a more sustainable approach must be taken. The following suggestions can go a long way in decreasing worm burdens and the need for using chemical dewormers.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
The most common complication from vaccination is some form of injection site reaction. Swelling at the injection site indicates a reaction. This can occur in the form of a granuloma or ‘shot knot’ that requires no treatment and often resolves slowly over a period of weeks to months, or an injection site abscess. An abscess may require drainage and antibiotic treatment. Less commonly, animals may have allergic reactions to vaccination. Most often this occurs very quickly post vaccination and can be treated by the veterinarian with epinephrine as an antidote.

Losses in scouring calves most often occur from the dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and the hypoglycemia and hypothermia that result secondarily to scours as opposed to the actual viral or bacterial infection itself. A veterinary examination can help to determine the level of dehydration and acidosis (electrolyte imbalance) present and the level of treatment required. Checking the calf's rectal temperature is also important. A fever often suggests severe infection and septicemia while a low temperature may indicate the need to warm the calf. A glucometer can be used to assess hypoglycemia.

After routine castration geldings should be stall rested for 12-24 hours to allow blood clots to organize and to minimize post surgical hemorrhage. Observe the horse closely and often for signs of excessive bleeding during this period of time. A consistent drip of blood from the scrotum is normal immediately after castration but this should gradually diminish in the hours following surgery. Feed and hay should be withheld until the animal is alert and fully recovered from the anesthetic. This may take 1-2 hours after the animal is on its feet.
