Dental Examination
During a dental exam, our Matthews dentist will check your neck and oral tissues for lumps, red or white patches or recurring sore areas. Screening for early changes in the oral tissue can help detect cancer at a stage when it can be more successfully treated.
X-rays
While dental x-rays are most commonly used to find tooth decay or cavities, they also have many other uses. X-rays can be used to examine tooth roots and to check the health of the bony areas surrounding the teeth. In children and teens, x-rays can help see the development of teeth as well as determine if a patient has periodontal disease. X-rays are also used to monitor a patient’s overall dental health.

Teeth Cleaning
Professional teeth cleanings are an essential part of a healthy oral hygiene regimen. You should visit your dentist at least twice a year for an evaluation of your teeth and gums in addition to a thorough cleaning. During a dental cleaning, you may receive diagnostic and preventative services, as well as educational information to help keep your mouth healthy. In between routine cleanings, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent gum disease and tarter build-up.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a mineral that has been found highly-effective in the prevention of tooth decay. When fluoride reaches the teeth, it absorbs into the enamel. This process helps replenish lost calcium and phosphorous to maintain strong teeth. While fluoride is found naturally in water sources and in some foods like fish, meat, eggs, and tea, not everyone gets enough fluoride in their diet. Children and adults can supplement their fluoride consumption with fluoride treatments available in dental offices.
Dental Sealants
In addition to the meticulous cleaning, polishing, and examination of your teeth, we also take the time to help our patients develop proper oral hygiene habits at home. We will evaluate your hygiene techniques and make adjustments to your routine where needed. Our doctors and hygienists will also make suggestions for preventative measures such as dental sealants or nightguards to protect against bruxism & TMJ.

Fillings
Resin Composite
The bonding procedure is usually completed in one visit with our Matthews dentist. The first step is to remove the decayed or unsightly portion of the tooth. The tooth is then etched with a weak liquid or gel acid and a bonding agent is then applied. This will allow the composite resin to be placed in the prepared tooth, shaped, and hardened with a curing light. The restoration is then trimmed, shaped and polished, leaving you with a beautifully sculpted, natural-looking restoration.
Veneers
Porcelain veneers are extremely thin casings of ceramic that are bonded to the front of the patients’ tooth to create a new smile. Porcelain veneers are placed over the front of teeth that appear too small or large, slightly discolored, or simply are not cosmetically pleasing to the patient. For many patients, teeth may have chipped, become discolored, or are slightly crooked. For the majority of these patients, porcelain veneers can prove to be the perfect solution.
Crowns
Inlays and onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns. These partial crowns are utilized when there is still a healthy enamel portion of the tooth. An inlay or onlay is a like a puzzle piece that will be fitted into the remaining portion of the tooth to help increase its strength. This piece is usually crafted out of porcelain or gold, but can also be made of a composite material. We will make the determination as to which restoration will work best in your specific situation.
Bridges
A bridge, by definition, is a link or connection between two permanent structures. A dental bridge is very similar in that it attaches the restorative teeth (bridge) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. This bridge acts as your new teeth, closing the gap and restoring your smile. Bridges are often constructed of gold metal or ceramic foundations with porcelain fused to the foundation. Restorative Dentistry
During a dental appointment, our dentist will examine your mouth using visual, mechanical, and sometimes radiographic techniques. Depending on your symptoms and any problems found, a treatment plan will be discussed. Some forms of restorative dentistry are minimally-invasive and can be completed in a single appointment. Other diagnosis’s may be more complex and will require multiple visits.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy is a form of endodontic treatment that is recommended when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed. Teeth can become inflamed or infected for a wide range of reasons, such as deep decay, a chip or crack in a tooth, or repeated dental procedures. In some instances, an injury to a tooth can cause soft tissue damage that leads to inflammation and the need for root canal treatment. Root canal therapy is a common procedure that can save a tooth and prevent the need for an extraction.

Periodontal Surgery
Periodontal Disease is a chronic condition that needs immediate attention. Through a series of Periodontal Cleanings, Root Planing & Scaling, Laser Therapy and Local Antibiotics, this condition can be controlled. Periodontal Surgery is only necessary for severe cases.
Deep Cleaning

Dentures
Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While dentures take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as one’s natural teeth, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever.

Dental Implants
Depending on the method used, receiving an implant can take a total of six months or more to complete. The traditional method involves two procedures taking place three to six months apart. The first procedure involves making a small incision in the gum and a hole in the bone underneath. The implant is then placed into the hole and bone and stitched closed. Once the implant has had a chance to heal, a second procedure is done to place a collar (healing cap) onto the top of the implant.

Tooth Extractions
Before removing a wisdom tooth, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. A general anesthetic may be used, especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed at the same time. A general anesthetic prevents pain in the whole body and will make you groggy or cause you to sleep through the procedure. It’s recommended that you don’t eat or drink after midnight on the night before surgery, so you are prepared for the anesthetic.

Invisalign Orthodontics
During your consultation, we will evaluate your needs and determine if you’re a suitable candidate. While Invisalign can help patients with simple to complex dental issues, it’s not suitable for everyone. During this consultation, you will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have and address any concerns.
Braces
Once impressions of your teeth have been made, we will send them to a lab to have a series of custom-made aligners made exclusively for your mouth. Unlike traditional metal braces, these BPA-free plastic aligners will not irritate your gums or cheeks. The aligners fit over your teeth and should be worn throughout the day and night. Only remove the aligners when you eat or brush your teeth.

Raised in nearby Concord, North Carolina, Dr. David Yu earned his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. He is member of the American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society and the Academy of General Dentistry. During his years in Chapel Hill, Dr. Yu served as an advisor in the establishment of the Undergraduate Student National Dental Association, which serves as an interest group for undergraduate students seeking to pursue a career in dentistry.
