Preventive Care

Vaccination
There are many challenges in caring for pets that cannot be brought into the clinic. For that reason, we prefer to reserve house call visits for pets we have seen before and are familiar with their special needs. Our house call services are very limited, as we cannot carry all of our clinic equipment in our vehicles. Services are generally limited to vaccinations and obtaining basic lab samples.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Regular blood work with a urinalysis should be done to review certain values. This will help catch any problems early. It is important to check to make sure that your pet's kidneys and liver is working properly. The doctors are looking for early signs of diabetes, cancer, and other potential problems. We highly recommend thyroid panels for our senior cats and adult dogs with weight and or skin problems.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
In order to certify your dog’s hips, we will need to anesthetize or sedate your pet for radiographs (x-rays). In addition to traditional hip-extended radiographs, we use a special device to hold your pet in position and retract the legs/hips in order to produce radiographs that will allow radiologists to measure the displacement of the femur in your pet’s hips (Compression and Distraction radiographs). These measurements (Distraction Index - or DI) provide a way to predict hip laxiety, dysplasia, and osteoarthritis. The lower the DI, the tighter the hips. Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Hip dysplasia is diagnosed in many breeds, both large and small, dogs and cats. Penn HIP Certification has been shown to be the most reliable indicator of future hip osteoarthritis. In order to ensure only the best dogs are used for breeding, passing on their healthy hips, we offer Penn HIP Certification.

Veterinary Surgery
Heart River Animal Hospital has been working with Dr. Tom Bettenhausen, DVM since 2018 to provide orthopedic surgical services. Dr Bettenhausen has extensive training and experience in orthopedic procedures to treat ACL [cruciate ligament] injuries (TPLO, TTA, Extracapsular fixation), fractures (pins, plates and screw), and patellar luxations and hip conditions. Dr Bettenhausen helps us keep our patients moving comfortably.
Laser Surgery
Laser surgery uses a beam of a certain wavelength of light to cut tissue instead of using a scalpel blade. Because our surgeons are highly skilled, they can control the amount of light used, which gives them extreme surgical precision.
Spaying and Neutering
Schedule spay and neuter appointments before the tidal wave gets started. Spaying and neutering increases quality of life- yours and theirs! After spring comes summer!!! Sunshine and travel, make sure pets are up to date on vaccinations. Planning on boarding your pets? Dogs need current Bordetella (aka Kennel Cough) vaccinations. The Bordetella vaccination should be given at least 2 weeks before your dog goes to the boarding kennel. Need a house sitter instead? We can refer you to one.

Laboratory Services
The best part of being able to run laboratory tests in our hospital is that we can diagnose your pets much sooner than if we had to send the blood work out to another laboratory. Whenever your pets are not feeling well, we can have test results in a timely manner instead of waiting a day or more for baseline test results.
