X-rays
As parents ourselves, we appreciate the concern any parent can have with exposing their child to dental x-rays. The simple truth is we cannot properly and effectively care for your child without them. There is a minimum standard of care that must be met when providing oral health care and it involves appropriate dental x-rays at an appropriate frequency specific to each patient’s needs.

Teeth Cleaning
The beginning of summer is the perfect time to schedule a dental cleaning and check-up. If your child heads into the summer with a good report from the dentist, you’ll both be able to relax and enjoy the summer to the fullest. The summer is also a great time for a check-up and cleaning because summertime means more free time — and you don’t have coordinate appointment times around your child’s school schedule.
Fluoride Treatment
As children mature beyond the age of three, their ability to reason and tolerate more involved preventive procedures increases. An oral exam along with a cleaning and fluoride treatment can be expected at every check-up visit. X rays are taken periodically, and their frequency is determined by your child’s risk factors along with their stage of growth and development. The purpose for all this is to detect early signs of disease in the mouth to either the teeth and or gums. Remember, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, meaning identifying and treating minor problems early can spare you the time and expense of more complicated and costly dental procedures.
Dental Sealants
Children with special needs deserve our special attention. Children with medical problems that cannot be prevented should not be asked to suffer from dental problems that can be prevented. Starting preventive dentistry early is particularly important for a special needs child. If dental care is started early and followed conscientiously, every child can enjoy a healthy smile. Unlike many of the health conditions faced by patients with special needs, dental disease is preventable. A special needs child will benefit from the preventive approach recommended for all children: effective brushing and flossing, limited snacking, adequate fluoride, sealants, and regular dental visits.
Space Maintainers
A baby tooth usually stays in place until it is ready to be lost on its own and replaced by a permanent tooth. With some children, this may not occur until the child is as old as age 14. Sometimes though, a baby tooth is lost too soon due to injury or dental disease. If a baby tooth is lost too soon, the remaining adjacent teeth may shift or drift into the empty space. When this occurs, it creates a lack of space in the jaw for the future permanent tooth. The results in a permanent tooth that may not emerge or if it does, will do so in an improper position. This condition will ensure the need for orthodontic treatment and add to its complexity and cost. A space maintainer, also known as a spacer, if deemed necessary, will help prevent the unwanted affects listed above. By holding open the empty space left by the premature loss of a baby tooth, the space maintainer will stabilize the remaining teeth preventing movement until the permanent tooth that replaces the prematurely lost baby tooth comes in.

Fillings
Resin Composite
At Pediatric Dentistry of Central Florida, we use resins or “tooth colored” fillings to restore smaller sized cavities on teeth. Tooth Colored Fillings are made from durable plastics and glass particles known as silicates. More commonly referred to as composite resins in the dental field, Tooth Colored Fillings are highly esthetic and allows for more conservative treatment as only the decayed tooth tissue is removed preserving a greater amount of healthier tooth structure.
Crowns
When a cavity is too large to be filled, a crown restoration is necessary. Crowns are full coverage restorations that will protect the tooth and last longer than a filling.
Restorative Dentistry
Tooth decay (cavities) is the most common chronic early childhood disease in the United States. Nearly 5 out of 10 U.S. children will have had tooth decay by the time they go to kindergarten. Unfortunately, this means there may come a time where tooth decay becomes a reality for your child and restorative dentistry becomes necessary. The size of the cavity determines the restorative treatment necessary.

Pulpotomy
Every tooth has nerve tissue, known as the pulp, and it needs to remain healthy for your child’s tooth to be vital and pain free. Extensive decay that has damaged the nerve or a traumatic injury that has also injured the nerve will create infection that will result in tooth pain and infection. A pulpotomy (partial nerve removal) or a pulpectomy (complete nerve removal) will be performed to properly restore your child’s tooth and return it to good health. Which nerve treatment is performed depends on the tooth being treated and the extent of disease being experienced by the tooth. Once completed, a crown restoration is usually performed to return the tooth to complete function. One of our pediatric dentists can discuss this treatment with you in greater detail if it becomes necessary for your child.
Root Canal Treatment
I have needed to visit multiple dentist offices for my child the first past few weeks. My child has a bad cavity that needs a root canal. This office has been able to work with an Endodontist to schedule IV sedation for the procedure. We tried to have the root canal done at a different Endodontist’s office and my child refused treatment when they felt and saw the needle. Today the dentist was able to give my child a shot to clean the cavity out and my child didn’t even realize they were getting or had received a shot. I wanted to give the dentist a huge hug. All I can say is THANK YOU!

Orthodontics
Dr. Mansour developed a passion for the field of orthodontics while in dental school and went on to complete three years of specialty training in orthodontics at the University of Florida. In addition to providing orthodontic care for our pediatric patients, he also provides orthodontic treatment at his private practices in Kissimmee and St. Cloud. Dr. Mansour enjoys spending his time with his wife, Dr. Kelly Mansour (pediatric dentist) and his sons Coby and Kai. He enjoys playing golf and basketball and watching Gator football!
Braces
Our orthodontist provides limited and comprehensive orthodontic care for all ages at our Maitland location. Limited orthodontic care is provided for our younger patients by our pediatric dentists at our Maitland and St. Cloud locations. The best way to know when your child is ready for braces is to stay up to date with routine care appointments.
