Founded in 1971, The Louisville-Jefferson County Public Defender is a nonprofit organization that offers legal services in Kentucky. It renders legal services to indigent adults and juveniles who are accused of crimes and status offenses. The organization also provides services to people who are subjected to involuntary hospitalization due to mental illnesses. It offers defense representation in all state courts at various levels, as well as appellate and postconviction advocacy in the state and federal courts. The Louisville-Jefferson County Public Defender operates a mixed caseload and vertical representation system in accordance with the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice. It employs a work force of attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, law clerks and secretaries. The Louisville-Jefferson County Public Defender maintains a location in Louisville, Ky.
