Glaucoma is a very serious condition of the eye. Without treatment, it can result in permanent vision loss. Glaucoma does not always show signs, so you could have it without knowing. Annual eye exams are the best way to avoid and/or treat glaucoma and many other eye conditions.

Martin L. Fishman, M.D. was raised in California, and finished his pre-medical studies at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating cum laude in Medical Sciences. He graduated in the top 10% of his medical school class at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, and finished a medical internship at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California, a major UCLA teaching hospital. Dr. Fishman completed a residency in ophthalmology at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. He then spent two years at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, as a Clinical Fellow at the National Eye Institute, where he performed clinical and laboratory research.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and stems from retina deterioration. This condition can cause partial vision loss, vision abnormalities, blurred vision, and an inability to see in dimly lit areas. Cataracts, on the other hand, occur when you have a clouding over the lens of your eye, making your vision appear cloudy or fuzzy. Everything you see may look blurred, and it can make seeing at night difficult.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK stands for laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis. This vision correction procedure reshapes the cornea of the eye to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. After the eye has been numbed, the laser creates an incredibly thin incision that allows a flap of the outer layer of corneal tissue, the epithelial layer, to be pulled aside. The laser then vaporizes tiny bits of the underlying tissue to change the way the cornea refracts incoming light. Your eye doctor uses Wavefront Custom Vue technology to achieve the most precise correction possible. Unlike standardized corrective methods, Wavefront Custom Vue compensates for all the little aberrations and variations in your individual corneal contours by using wavefront techniques to map the corneal surface in precise detail. This allows for completely personalized correction of your refractive error.
Cataracts
If your cataracts are not fully developed or small, our eye doctors typically recommend corrective lenses. Contacts and glasses can help clarify your vision so that you can drive safely, read a book, work on the computer and perform your daily tasks. If your cataracts get worse or start impacting your daily life, the eye doctor managing your care may recommend surgery to remove the cataract.
Cataract Surgery
Almost every cataract surgery requires the insertion of an intraocular lens (IOL). If an IOL isnâ€™t used or canâ€™t be inserted, glasses or contacts must be worn for vision correction after the surgery. Advancement in IOL technology means that the lenses can be designed with your eyeglasses or contact lens prescription. This helps treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Multifocal IOLs are also available.

Dr. Aruna Rajagopalan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Optometry from India. She came to the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in Vision Science where she researched different kinds of contact lenses. Her desire to work closely with patients led her to get a Doctorate degree in Optometry from New England college of Optometry in Boston. As part of her clinical rotations at several VA medical centers and community health centers, she gained a lot of experience in treating ocular diseases like macular, degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts.

Ultrasound
Phacoemulsification is an outpatient cataract surgery that involves breaking-up the lens of the eye via an ultrasound probe. The small probe is about the size of a needle and is inserted into your eye via a very small incision. The ultrasound is used to break apart the lens of the eye. Then, the probe is used to remove the pieces. After your natural lens has been removed, an artificial lens will be inserted into your eye. If you need surgery in both of your eyes, it will require two separate surgeries, usually separated by several weeks. This allows your first eye to heal before the cataract in your other eye is removed.

Dr. Ryan Basham is proud to be practicing in the very same town in which he grew up. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory for high school and finished his B.S. in Biology at Creighton University in Omaha. Dr. Ryan continued his medical school at Creighton where he met his wife (Dr. Elizabeth Basham). Moving to the “windy city” of Chicago, Dr. Ryan completed a year of general surgery and three years of ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center. Then upon returning to the Bay Area, he underwent further training through a combined fellowship in ophthalmic pathology at UCSF and Stanford. Dr. Ryan was eager to join his father, Dr. Arthur Basham, in his private practice of 35 years in Los Gatos. Joining Spectrum Eye Physicians in June 2019, Dr. Ryan Basham continues to provide the Los Gatos community with familiar, quality care. He enjoys spending his spare time with his family in Los Gatos and surfing in Santa Cruz.
Mohs Surgery
Cancer or trauma to the eyelids may require surgical reconstruction. The delicate work of eyelid cancer removal may call for a minimally-invasive technique called Mohs micrographic surgery, in which case we can refer you to one of our preferred Mohs surgery partners. Skin grafts and tissue flaps can then restore the eyelid.
Reconstructive Surgery
He was elected Chief Resident and awarded a Heed Fellowship during his ophthalmology residency at Columbia University in New York. He further completed sub-specialty fellowship training in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center and Texas Oculoplastic Consultants, both in Texas.

Eyelid Surgery
Entropion is an inward-turned eyelid, while ectropion is an outward-turned eyelid. Both of these eyelid malposition problems can be corrected through eyelid surgery.

Forehead Lift
If the procedure is to be only a brow lift and not a forehead lift, the incisions are sometimes made directly at or above the brow line. Eyelid surgery is often performed along with a forehead or brow lift, in order to improve the appearance of droopiness in the entire area. This may be especially necessary in cases where the drooping skin is causing problems with vision.
