Computed Tomography
We provide special tests for the feet, including gait analysis and X-rays. The gait test measures stride, tests foot and ankle strength, and records how the bones in the leg and foot line up when walking. X-rays show the shape of the bones, the spacing between bones, and can reveal how severe the arthritis is, making them valuable to diagnosing arthritis. The exam may also involve a CT scan or MRI to evaluate your condition. After completing the evaluation and reviewing test findings, we will make a diagnosis and recommend a treatment plan.

Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails are a common problem in which your toenail grows underneath the skin on the side of your toe. If an ingrown nail causes a break in the skin, bacteria may enter and cause an infection in the area, which is often marked by drainage and a foul odor. However, even if the toe is not painful, red, swollen or warm, a nail that curves downward into the skin can progress to an infection. Ingrown toenails commonly only affect on the big toe, but can occur on any of the toes.

A corn, or foot corn, is scientifically referred to as a heloma. While the term corn is often times used in place of the term callus, it is important to note that they are different. Perhaps the greatest distinction between the two is the location in which they typically form. Corns usually occur in areas of little pressure or non-weight bearing areas, such as on the tops and sides of toes, and typically have a hard center surrounded by tender skin. They can be painful when pressed and result in a dull ache.

One of the most common sports injuries treated at American Foot & Leg Specialists is an Achilles injury or rupture. Most often it is caused by runners who change their running routines and increase their mileage, such as the amount of uphill running, and even in changes in footwear can cause injury. These factors can lead to Achilles tendonitis, a condition of irritation and inflammation of the large tendon in the back of the ankle, which can cause swelling and become quite painful if not diagnosed and treated immediately.

For grade two and grade three sprains, our physicians immobilize the ankle with a wrap or splint and prescribe a regimen of physical therapy exercises along with rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the ankle. For grade three sprains, immobilization of the joint lasts much longer and in extreme cases, surgical reconstruction of the ligaments might be required.

Flat Feet
Flat feet and fallen arches are used interchangeably to refer to a condition in which there is no arch of the foot. The arch is formed by tendons in the foot that stretch from the heel to the base of the toes, or metatarsals. There are also supporting tendons that originate in the lower leg. Together, these tendons work to form an arch, noticeable as a slight rise in the inner midsole of the foot. This rise, or arch, can be classified as a normal arch, a high arch, or a fallen arch. When tendons do not work together to pull properly, a fallen arch or flat foot occurs. Aside from the occasional pain associated with this condition, problems with fallen arches can extend upwards to the ankles, knees, hips, and even the back, leading to an altering of the biomechanics of the body.

Heel Spurs
A heel spur is a bone growth on the heel bone resulting from chronic overstretching of the plantar fascia, the ligament on the bottom of the foot which supports the arch. The plantar fascia attaches to the bottom of the heel bone and usually surrounds the area of the spur. When you have heel pain it is due to swelling of the tissue around the spur, not the presence of the spur. The spur will not go away, but with proper treatment the pain will go away once the swelling is resolved. The board-certified podiatrists at American Foot & Leg Specialists will work with you to diagnose the cause of your heel pain and recommend a course of treatment.

At American Foot & Leg Specialists, the starting point for any heel pain treatment is reducing the swelling with anti-inflammatory medication and ice therapy. The next step is learning how and when to stretch and ice down the tissue. Finally, providing support for the plantar fascia ligament allows it to rest and not become chronically over fatigued or overstretched. In some resistant cases, cortisone injections are used when the swelling and pain does not improve. Good results are achieved 95-98% of the time by following these treatment plans.
