Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. It occurs when the pressure inside the eye rises, damaging the optic nerve and causing vision loss. The condition often develops over many years without causing pain or other noticeable symptoms – so you may not experience vision loss until the disease has progressed. Symptoms that you could be developing glaucoma include blurred vision, loss of peripheral vision, halo effects around lights, and painful or reddened eyes. People at high risk include those who are over the age of 40, diabetic, near-sighted, African-American, or who have a family history of glaucoma.
Ophthalmology
Dr. John T. Pajka graduated with honors from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1986. He completed an Internship at Riverside Hospital in Columbus and served his residency at the Ohio State University Department of Ophthalmology, where he is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
There are two kinds of macular degeneration: “wet” and “dry.” The “wet” form can be treated in its early stages. Regular eye exams are highly recommended to detect macular degeneration early and prevent permanent vision loss.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a safe, reliable and painless way to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. LASIK changes the way light is bent, or refracted, as it passes through the cornea so that it focuses properly on the retina and objects can be seen clearly.
Cataracts
A cataract is a cloudy area in the normally clear lens in the front of the eye. Cataracts are caused by a chemical change of unknown origin in the eye, and cause blurred or distorted vision. They cannot be prevented from forming, but early detection through regular eye exams can help maintain the clearest vision possible.
Cataract Surgery
Using methods similar to those in cataract surgery, refractive lenses are implanted in place of the eye’s natural lens. The procedure use local anesthesia and take approximately 15-30 minutes. The new lens helps the patient focus better, allowing the patient to shift focus between distant and nearby objects.
Eye Exam
If you are a candidate, your first step is to come in for a complete eye exam. You must be free of contact lenses for at least 2 to 3 weeks for soft contacts and at least 3 to 4 weeks for hard lenses before your exam. During your exam we will carefully measure your prescription before and after we dilate your eyes and examine your eyes to make sure they are healthy. You will also have a scanning topography done to measure the shape, contour, and thickness of your corneas. A Wavescan an “individualized fingerprint” of your eye will also be done. It is this technology that Dr. Pajka will use to customize your treatment for your individual eyes.

Dr. Mitchell Romito graduated in 2013 from The Ohio State University summa cum laude with Honors in Biomedical Engineering and as President of the university chapter of Tau Beta Pi, The Engineering Honor Society. His early interest in ophthalmology lead him to be Prevent Blindness Ohio Certified in 2012. He continued his studies at The Ohio State University College of Medicine on a full Dean’s Scholarship for academic merit where he served on the Honor and Professionalism Committee for two years. During this time, he conducted and published research on a novel cancer therapy in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. He then completed his Internal Medicine internship and Ophthalmology residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. During his residency, he designed and prototyped his own surgical instrument for use in glaucoma surgery.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that weakens the blood vessels that nourish the retina. Vision can be lost if these weak vessels leak, swell or develop thin branches. In its advanced stages, diabetic retinopathy can cause blurred or cloudy vision, floaters and blind spots – and, eventually, blindness. This damage is irreversible. However, treatment can slow disease progression and prevent further vision loss. Treatment modalities include laser and surgical procedures.
