The American Dental Association recommends a child have their first dental exam around the age of three. If you or the pediatrician suspect decay or a problem at any age call for a quick dental exam. If your child is very young and uncooperative medications are available to sedate them for the exam or treatment. For the very young or special needs child treatment may need to be done under general anesthesia.

The evidence is clear, fluoride varnish is better than fluoride gel for young patients at risk for getting cavities. Dental sealants are not for everyone. It’s not clear if every tooth with a root canal will need a crown or cap. You must take into account the patients habits and how much of the tooth is remaining. Fillings
Many times white fillings are more conservative than the traditional silver amalgam fillings. Since they are bonded in place they can also strengthen a previously filled tooth and prevent the tooth from cracking. White fillings are a little more demanding to work with compared to silver amalgam fillings and with regular dental checkups last just as long. Initially they may be a little more sensitive to hot and cold but it often goes away quickly within two weeks. Since Resin Bonded Ceramic (RBC) fillings set immediately you can eat normally once the local anesthetic has worn off.
Veneers
Porcelain Veneers or Lumineers are an advanced form of cosmetic dentistry. They are beautiful and ideal for that patient who wants to change the color or shape of there teeth and wants something durable and as esthetic as natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers or Lunineers are thin eggshells of porcelain bonded onto your existing teeth. I often use the analogy to formica cabinets. The framework is built and then the formica, in any color or design is glued on top. Once glued down the formica is very strong and durable. Formica sheets by themselves are very brittle and easily broken. Porcelain veneers until they are bonded to the tooth are very thin and brittle. This is not considered a reversible procedure and many times the natural teeth need to be modified to achieve the desired result.
Crowns
Crowns or caps represent the same thing. The terms are often used interchangeably. A crown (cap) is a cover or helmet that covers the remaining tooth or root to bring it back to form and function. A bridge involves several crowns to restore badly broken down and can be used to fill in spaces where a tooth was extracted or missing. Your tooth will require a cap or crown when more than half the enamel is damaged or missing and a filling would weaken the tooth or not stand up to chewing over time. Sometimes dark or discolored teeth, congenitally small teeth or rotated teeth will require crowns to look and function normally.
Bridges
Caps, crowns and bridges can be made from various materials. The gold standard for durability is real gold. Gold lacks the esthetics of porcelain so it has limited applications. Porcelain today can be fused to a metal framework, pressed or milled using CAD/CAM technology providing a natural appearance.
Dental Bonding
We are constantly trying to reduce dental anxiety and improve the health and smiles of our patients. The photos below are actual examples of cosmetic bonding or treatments performed in our Levittown dental office. Several of the photo’s illustrate how to replace old white fillings with newer more cosmetic materials. Another group demonstrates how to bond a composite bridge in place or restore a cracked tooth and broken silver amalgam filling with a new white filling. Also included in the gallery is an example of how to close a gap between your front teeth (a diastema).
Restorative Dentistry
Restorative dentistry is the day to day practice of dentistry. It involves fixing cracked teeth, worn teeth, abscessed teeth with cavities, cosmetic bonding, dentures, caps, crowns and bridges. Restorative dentistry also now includes implants to replace missing teeth so you can use them as a foundation to build new teeth.

Root Canal Treatment
Just hearing the word root canal will make many patients cringe. Society has given root canal therapy a horrible reputation when it fact is a relatively easy painless procedure performed by your dentist or endodontist (root canal specialist). The most common causes or reasons for needing a root canal are deep decay, large fillings or a serious injury to your tooth.Years ago infected, broken or abscessed teeth were routinely extracted. Today many of these teeth can be saved with root canal therapy.

Dentures
At Anxiety Free Dental we don’t just do dentures. We make beautiful dentures that look like natural teeth and provides lip support for that attractive smile. Our goal is to be as conservative as possible but sometimes teeth can’t be saved and a Full or Partial denture may be right for you. A full denture is something that replaces all of your missing teeth and comes out of your mouth. It is a prosthesis meant to replace all your missing teeth. An immediate denture is a denture that is inserted and given to the patient the same day that all the teeth are extracted. Since there is a significant amount of healing and shrinkage of the infected gums after surgery patients with immediate dentures should have a second traditional denture made. A traditional denture is a denture made to replace an existing immediate denture or older denture showing signs of wear. The life expectancy of a traditional denture is 5 years due to changes inside the mouth affecting the fit and the amount of wear to the teeth.

Dental Implants
Cosmetic dentists who are members of an organization and obtain Fellowship or Mastership status are still general restorative dentists. The same is true for dentists who place and or restore implants. Many of the specialists and general restorative dentists work with implants.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
A dental extraction or oral surgery is a common procedure performed by a dentist. There are many reasons why a tooth needs to be removed. A tooth can be decayed beyond the point of no repair. Your tooth may be cracked or fractured below the gum line and broken beyond repair. An abscessed tooth with a severe dental infection involving the jaw bone may require and extraction. Also impacted teeth that are stuck in place and there is no room for them may require an extraction.
Maxillofacial Surgery
General dentists provide most of the restorative dental services to their patients. Occasionally the expertise of a specialist may be required. The five major specialties in dentistry are Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Radiology. Some practitioners may limit their practice or join an organization focused on certain types of restorative dentistry but they are not specialists.
Tooth Extractions
Tooth extraction is a minor surgical procedure performed by the dentist. With todays modern local anesthetics your tooth can be pulled easily and painlessly. Oral Sedation and I.V. intravenous sedation is available to relieve your fears and anxiety.

Teeth Whitening
As we get older so do our teeth and they naturally darken or turn yellow. Some patients just have dark or yellow teeth. If you would like to whiten or lighten the color or your teeth the tooth bleaching is an option for you. We currently do not fully understand how it works but it does. Studies have shown tooth bleaching to be effective and safe.
Cosmetic Dentistry
Today you have a choice in dental filling materials. Resin Bonded Ceramic (RBC) fillings (white Fillings) restore a tooth back to it’s original shape and color. Cosmetic Dentisty is restoring a tooth to an ideal shape and ideal color by bonding this new space age material to the tooth. Ideal cosmetic dentistry should look like no dentistry was done at all.
