Fibromyalgia is one of the more common pain syndromes encountered by pain physicians. This condition consists of chronic widespread aches, pain, stiffness and tenderness. Pain is considered to be widespread when it affects all four areas of the body. A patient with at least 11 of 18 specific trigger points involving all four quadrants of the body must be present to establish the diagnosis. Fibromyalgia is often also associated with difficulties sleeping, fatigue, depression, headaches, and anxiety. Patients with this condition have specific anatomical trigger points, or tender points that hurt when pressed. Touching these sensitive spots will cause the patient to pull back or flinch. Tissue trauma is very common in patients with fibromyalgia, although the exact cause is still unknown.

The entire procedure takes about 45 minutes from start to finish and does not require sedation as most patients tolerate it very well. After arriving in the surgicenter, a nurse will draw 10-20cc of blood from a vein in your arm. The blood will then be separated by a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors. The physician will then use a ultrasound or fluoroscope to isolate the proper target for the PRP and using a needle inject the PRP into the inflamed area.

Back pain is an extremely common problem affecting millions each year. A wide variety of issues can lead to back pain originating from the muscles, bones, joints or nerves. Although it does occur most commonly in the low back the pain can be anywhere from the neck to the pelvis. Certain associated symptoms such as weakness, fever, or bowel/bladder control problems might require additional workup. Your pain treatment physician in these instances will order more advanced imaging (MRI/CT scan) and surgical evaluation if indicated.

Discography is a diagnostic test by which the integrity of an intervertebral disc is tested through injection of contrast material in the disc. Normal discs can withstand certain amount of pressure without pain. Abnormal discs such as those with tears or degeneration will be painful with pressurization. A discogram is typically followed by a CT scan to evaluate the spread of contrast within the disc.

Dr. Mousavi has participated in numerous scientific presentations and publications in NY State and national conferences. He served as President of the NY State Society of Anesthesiologist Resident and Fellow sections functioning as a team leader to improve the education and practice of anesthesiology in New York State.

Shingles causes numbness, itching or severe pain followed by clusters of blister-like lesions in a strip-like pattern on one side of your body. Often times initially the surgeon is involved to ensure there is no sign of infection, surgical complications or new structural spine issues which may be causing the continued pain. An initial basic pain management plan may include physical therapy which can improve function, range of motion and pain. Different types and classes of medications are available and can be initiated to control symptoms. Interventional therapies such as epidural injections can be considered. In some patients spinal cord stimulation (neuromodulation) can be used to decrease the pain signal and produce a more pleasant sensation over the previously painful area. An advantage to this treatment option is it can be trialed prior to implantation to determine effectiveness.
