Lakeshore Mental Health Institute

I have stayed at Lakeshore twice within the past year (the visits being nearly a year apart). The first time I went was the worst, though it was the shorter of the two stays. It's changed a good deal in the past year, for the better. It's still awful. The hospital is absolutely disgusting. Patients will pee on themselves and the chairs, then the nursing staff and techs will take forever (sometimes hours) to clean it up. The tech are either lazy or stretched far too thin because they aren't very helpful. The doctor (at least for the women's acute ward) doesn't listen. The Treatment Teams seems to make up their mind about whether or not they want to discharge you before they even speak to you each day. They don't base it on how you're doing, but instead they seem to base it on how much paperwork they want to bother doing. It's absolutely ridiculous. Not all the staff are incompetent jerks, because some are helpful and nice, it's just that those who are that way are few and far between.

If you're considering checking a family member, or yourself, into a mental health facility, I'd recommend you try everywhere else before settling for Lakeshore. If you simply need crisis intervention I would suggest calling Helen Ross McNabb Crisis Stabilization Unit. They are wonderful and most helpful. After that, check out Peninsula. Just do whatever possible to stay away from Lakeshore. It's awful.

The facilities are beautiful and the staff is helpful.
