General Info
History of the Thelma B. Pittman Jupiter Pre-School, Inc. In April of 1965 concerned residents of the Jupiter/Tequesta community acknowledged the need for all preschoolers in the community to be prepared for a successful start in Elementary School. Starting with just thirteen preschoolers and using a portion of the West Jupiter Volunteer Fire Station the Jupiter Preparatory School was established. However, the first classroom was not room enough for the growing number of preschoolers needing care in the community. In 1968 a dedicated group of residents in the community formed the Jupiter Preparatory School Auxiliary. The Auxiliary’s main goal was to supply volunteer workers and raise funds for a larger facility. In August of 1969, on the adjoining site, the ground breaking ceremony for a larger facility took place. Contributions, materials & labor were donated by local businesses and families in the community. In February of 1971, Jupiter Preparatory School was completed and officially dedicated to the children and families in the community. Additional staff and volunteers participated in the school’s program. The school’s total license capacity at that time was thirty-five. As the school continued to provide affordable quality child care and encourage the children to be active, creative explorers, more preschoolers enrolled in the program. Later, an additional Pre Kindergarten Classroom was added to the existing building increasing the licensed capacity. As time passed, Jupiter Pre School (as it was later named) needed more classroom space. With little room for expansion, the school converted an existing patio into a Two Year Old Classroom giving the center a total license capacity of sixty-five. A lending library, computer language center and volunteer reading program were also added to the program. In January of 1994, Jupiter Pre School was renamed (in honor of its first directress); The Thelma B. Pittman Jupiter Pre School, Inc. In July of 1997, Thelma B. Pittman Jupiter Pre School having demonstrated substantial compliance with nationally recognized Criteria for high quality early childhood programs was awarded National Accreditation by the (NAEYC) National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. That same year the school received the “Gold Seal of Excellence” by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
