Ultrasound
A vein specialist inserts a catheter into the diseased vein through a tiny incision below the knee. Guided by ultrasound imagining, a vein specialist will treat the vein in 7 cm segments for 20 seconds each. The catheter delivers consistent and uniform heat to contract the collagen in the vein walls, causing them to collapse and close. After the vein is sealed shut, blood is then naturally redirected to healthy veins. The treated vein then becomes fibrous tissue and will gradually be absorbed into surrounding tissue.
MRI
Often, your doctor will diagnosis this problem by examining your knee, taking an x-ray, and possibly performing an MRI of the knee. The MRI may show evidence of damage to the cartilage. The damage may be localized in one area of the knee or may be more diffuse, affecting different parts of the knee joint. Â

Radiation Therapy
During HDR brachytherapy treatments, a high intensity radiation source is delivered through a catheter to the tumor site with millimeter prevision through computer guidance.Â Because cancer often affects organs and other essential structures, it is important for radiation treatment to be tightly focused on tumors to minimize serious side effects. This technique ensures the maximum radiation dose is given to cancerous tissues, while minimizing exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue.High-dose rate brachytherapy is a powerful form of internally delivered radiation therapy that destroys many types of cancers, including skin, cervical, prostate and breast.Â HDR brachytherapy can be used as a standalone treatment or after a tumor has been surgically removed to eliminate any remaining cancerous cells.

Ben Blair is the clinical director of Freeman Radiation Oncology.Â He started his career in healthcare as a radiation therapist.Â After graduating from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, Ben left the Midwest for a job at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.Â While at UCLA, Ben was in charge of the stereotactic radiosurgery program and participated in all aspects of care throughout the radiation department.Â Ben joined the Freeman team in June of 2014 during itsÂ endeavor of starting a new radiation oncology program.Â Ben lives in Joplin, Missouri, with his wife and daughter.Â He enjoys reading, spending time with family and the outdoors.

Treatments for mild cartilage damage involve avoiding painful activities, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen. For more severe cases, treatments range from a steroid injection to surgery. For patients with localized arthritis, a surgical procedure known as knee arthroscopy can be performed. This is a minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate cartilage damage, which typically appears as an area where the cartilage has been damaged or worn away, leaving just the bone below. Sometimes, damage to the cartilage occurs in only one area of the knee. In this situation, a sample of the surrounding cartilage can be taken. This allows us to use a new technology for cartilage repair known as MACI (Matrix Associated Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation).
Hip Replacement
On the day of your test, please wearÂ comfortable clothing (two-piece) without metal fasteners. Let the person doing the test know if you have a surgical device or implant such as a hip replacement, colostomy, etc. You should not have a barium study or nuclear scan 7 days before your bone density exam.
