Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition that particularly causes a great deal of pain in the heel area. Some patients have described the pain as stabbing and is typically felt in the morning, when first getting out of bed. You may also experience pain with this condition if you stand or sit for long periods of time throughout the day. The development of plantar fasciitis is quite common among runners, those who are overweight, and those who do get enough support from their footwear.

The system is a machine with an applicator that looks like an ultrasound. It is administered once a week for a series of 4 to 5 treatments. Each treatment takes approximately 5 minutes depending on the size and number of areas treated. All treatments are performed by experienced professionals.

Orthopedic shoes are specially designed footwear for people who suffer with foot problems. Orthopedics offer a rubber sole, which cushions the heel and adds comfort to those who suffer from heel spurs. Another simple way to help the pain of heel spurs is to elevate the ankle to diminish the pain. When elevating the ankle, the blood is not focused on that area of the foot and can bring some relief. When all these options have been attempted, and there is still no relief from heel spurs, or the heel spurs return, surgery can be the more dramatic and permanent way to rid patient of heel spurs.

Bunion Surgery

Gangrene
Arterial wounds occur when main arteries in the legs block blood flow to the feet. People who are overweight, who have high blood pressure and cholesterol, who are diabetic, or who smoke have an elevated risk for arterial wounds. The lack of circulation can cause permanent tissue damage, wounds, and gangrene. Exams by a podiatrist can help prevent and monitor serious issues.
Ingrown Toenails
Signs that may indicate the formation of an ingrown toenail include redness, pain, swelling of the surrounding skin, possible bleeding or oozing of pus, and an overgrowth of the skin around the nail. The surrounding skin may also feel tender and become swollen or hardened. Most ingrown toenails are diagnosed by a simple physical exam; however, an x-ray may be required to show how deep the nail has grown into the skin of the toe.

Corns
If you happen to wear tight fitting shoes or tend to stand for the majority of your day, it’s likely that you may develop a foot condition known as a corn. When frequent friction or pressure is put on the foot, a small, hardened lump may form in that area. A corn may have a yellow hue and can typically be found on the side of the toes, as well as on the bottom of the feet. Though they are generally harmless, corns can often bring many patients discomfort.
Ulcer
Patients with diabetes often experience problems with their feet and need diabetic foot ulcer treatment. Because of problems with their nerves, diabetic patients can experience a lack of sensation on the skin, and injuries or irritations that would normally cause discomfort will go unnoticed, causing wounds to develop. Diabetic neuropathy is the medical term given to nerve damage caused by diabetes. Diabetes causes heightened blood glucose levels which, in turn, can lead to nerve damage. Diabetic neuropathy can develop over time and symptoms typically show up in the feet first. There may be numbness or pain, pins-and-needles or burning sensations, sensitivity to touch, muscle weakness and more.

Because wounds are a potentially dangerous condition for any diabetic, regular check-ups with a podiatrist should be part of the diabetic patient’s foot care regime. When problems do occur, we offer comprehensive care for wounds caused by injury, infected wounds, foot problems caused by poor circulation, and calluses.
Fungus
Athlete’s foot is an extremely contagious infection caused by a fungus that results in itchy, burning, dry, and flaking feet. The fungus that causes Athlete’s foot is known as tinea pedis and thrives in moist, dark environments such as shower floors, gyms, socks and shoes, common areas, public changing areas, bathrooms, dormitory-style houses, locker rooms, and public swimming pools. Athlete’s foot can be difficult to treat due to its highly contagious and recurrent nature.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis – This is a non-contagious skin condition in which thickened, red, and patchy areas develop on the skin. The cause is unknown but may be linked to immune system imbalances.

Stress fractures – When you repeatedly put pressure on your foot, kick a ball or otherwise engage in a sports-related activity, a stress fracture can occur. This type of injury can lead to pain, redness and bruising. A digital X-ray can quickly find the source of the fracture and guide sports medicine specialists in recommending helpful treatment.
Physical Therapy
There are various options your podiatrist may suggest for heel pain. Treatment options for heel pain typically include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which may reduce swelling and pain. Other options are physical therapy, athletic taping, and orthotics. In severe cases of heel pain, surgery may be required.

One of the most common causes of pain felt in the ankle region is a sprain. When ligaments in the ankle are torn or overstretched, an ankle sprain is likely to occur. There are three types of sprains that may develop: mild, moderate, and severe. In the case of a mild ankle sprain, the ankle is stable. The ligaments, however, are stretched. A moderate sprain consists of one or more ligaments being partially torn, and there’s limited movement. Severe ankle sprains include one or more torn ligaments, the ankle being unstable, and an inability to move the foot.

Achilles Tendonitis
A condition that often results in serious heel pain is known as Achilles tendonitis. This condition may form when the Achilles tendon is damaged as a result of overuse. This particular injury can be very serious, as the Achilles tendon’s main function is to connect the lower half of the calf muscles to the heel bone. If this tendon becomes damaged, it may result in difficulty walking and completing everyday tasks, as well as cause extreme discomfort and pain.
Ankle Instability
Sprains and fractures induce similar symptoms, and it can sometimes be difficult to determine which injury has occurred without a medical diagnosis. Symptoms include sudden and severe pain, bruising, swelling, or the inability to walk or bear weight on the injured foot. A sprain may also feel stiff while a fracture may be tender to the touch at the site of the injury. Symptoms of tendonitis include intermittent pain on the outside of the ankle, ankle instability or weakness, and a raised arch in the foot.

They may also be caused by the constant rubbing of tight shoes or may be hereditary. Foot stress or medical conditions like gout or rheumatoid arthritis can spur bunion growth.

Orthotics are especially useful for those with foot pain and those who may have fallen arches. Orthotics may help properly reposition the structures of the foot, easing the pressure and rebalancing the distribution of weight on the feet. Those with arthritic feet or those experiencing pain due to plantar fasciitis may find relief with orthotics, as they also tend to find issues with arch complications. Orthotics are a great way to give your feet extra support, which can come in handy for those who tend to stand or work on their feet for the majority of the day. The next type of patient who made aid in the use of orthotics are those with diabetes. It’s more likely for those with diabetes to develop corns and calluses. When this occurs, the friction of the corn or callus against your footwear can be extremely uncomfortable and painful. Orthotics, in this instance, can be useful in reducing the pressure placed upon the affected areas.

Toenail Fungus – While this condition is rare in children, it affects about half of the population over 70. It occurs when microscopic fungi enter the toenail through an injury and then spread due to the warmth and moisture trapped in socks and shoes. Symptoms of toenail fungus include thickening, yellowing, crumbling of the nail, as well as spots or streaks on the nail and even nail loss.

Hammertoes get their name due to the abnormal appearance of the toe, in which it bends down like a hammer. A hammertoe’s shape is formed by a deformed bending in the toe’s middle joint. There are many factors that play into how hammertoes form. Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, jamming, or breaking it, can make the toe more susceptible to developing into a hammertoe. Age and gender also influence the likelihood of getting a hammertoe. Women have also been known to be more likely to develop a hammertoe compared to men. You’re also more likely to develop this condition as you age. Certain diseases, such as arthritis and diabetes, have been known to influence the likelihood of forming a hammertoe.
Heel Spurs
Signs that you may have a heel spur include pain felt in the heel region, swelling at the front of the heel, and inflammation. If the affected area also feels warm to the touch, you may be experiencing the symptoms of a heel spur. Heel spurs are extremely uncomfortable and can often lead to a great deal of pain if left untreated. They may develop due to excess body weight, complications with arthritis, wearing poorly fitted shoes, and bruising of the heel.

Heel pain, while quite common, can be extremely uncomfortable and painful if not met with proper care or treatment. Heel pain may occur if you injure or overuse the heel. If left uncared for, the affected area may worsen, limiting your mobility and making it difficult to perform everyday activities, such as walking.

Arthritis develops when one or more joints become inflamed. When this occurs, it’s very likely for you to develop pain and stiffness in the affected area. Arthritis is typically common in the small joints of the foot as well as the ankle. It’s very possible that arthritis can develop due to previous injuries or traumas from the past. Some of the most common causes for arthritis may include old age, obesity, and genetic factors. It’s also been found that women who wear tight, high-heeled shoes for most of their lives are prone to experiencing foot complications such as arthritis.

Ingrown Toenails
Treatment for an ingrown toenail varies between patients and the severity of the condition. In most cases, it is best to see your podiatrist for thorough and proper treatment. After examining your toe, your podiatrist may prescribe oral antibiotics to clear the infection if one is present. Surgical removal of either a portion of the nail or the entire nail may also be considered. In some cases, complete removal or destruction of the nail root may be required. Most patients who undergo nail surgery experience minimal pain afterward and can return to normal activity the following day.
