Ultrasound is often used to provide deep heating to soft tissue structures in the body. Deep heating tendons, muscles or ligaments increases circulation to those tissues, which is thought to help the healing process. Increasing tissue temperature with ultrasound is also used to help decrease pain.

Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis is a type of electrical stimulation that is used to help administer medication to you in physical therapy. The electrical current pushes medication into your body through a patch on your skin. Your physical therapist will likely use iontophoresis to decrease inflammation or muscle spasm, or to break up calcium deposits that may occur in conditions like shoulder calcific tendonitis. Different medicines are used to accomplish different goals using iontophoresis.

Sciatica
When I first arrived at Columbia Gorge Physical Therapy my back was in such bad shape and I was in so much pain that I couldn’t walk upright. Not only did I have a bad case of sciatica but an X-ray showed severe arthritis in my back. Hannah, Ellie, and Donna had me walking straight up in the first 2 appointments. Pain was gone not long after and they taught me exercises to strengthen my core and my back. I’m pain free and moving easier. I wouldn’t be able to say that without the help of Columbia Gorge Physical Therapy.

Dear Bettina, I would like to express my gratitude for the continued excellent care that Columbia Gorge Therapy and Pilates has provided me. You accepted me as a Medicare Patient ten years ago when no other PT provider would. You and your very capable staff guided me through several challenges, the biggest being pre and post total hip replacement surgery. Especially helpful are the follow up Pilates sessions and guidance for my general good health. They also are a positive influence on my grown children and grandchildren when the instructors graciously let them occasionally drop in to their sessions. We all now regularly use foam rollers. Lesions
Cupping therapy, also called Myofascial Decompression, is a type of therapy where the physical therapist carefully places specialized cups on the injured areas of the body. These “trouble spots” are often areas that are tense or have lesions and knots. As the skin is lifted with the suction of the cup and the tissues receive more blood, these areas begin to heal. Cupping therapy is effective in decreasing stiffness and pain, improving tissue health, and increasing mobility.

Peter graduated with a BS in Exercise Physiology/Kinesiology from the University of Colorado. He received a BS in Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He worked at East Cascade Physical Therapy/MCMC for 13 years followed by Hood River Physical Therapy for 12 years. He moved to Canada for a couple years prior to working at Water’s Edge Physical Therapy/ MCMC for 5 years. He has been working at CGPT for about 1.5 years.
Frozen Shoulder
Deep heating can be used to increase the “stretchiness” of muscles and tendons that may be tight. If you have shoulder pain and have been diagnosed with a frozen shoulder, your physical therapist may use ultrasound to help improve the extensibility of the tissues around your shoulder prior to performing range of motion exercises. This may help improve the ability of your shoulder to stretch.

Leukotape works remarkably well to support injured joints, tendons, and ligaments. It can prevent movement after an ankle sprain, or improve normal movement in the case of kneecap pain or a shoulder injury. We also use it to improve posture and body awareness. Leukotape is a rayon-backed adhesive tape that has an extremely strong zinc oxide adhesive. It is very rigid and will not give with movement, even when you sweat. It can be used directly on your skin or can go over a protective cloth tape.
