Cataract Surgery
Dr. Gregory Schmidt is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of corneal disorders, corneal transplantation and cataract surgery with intraocular lens placement.
Eye Exam
Trabeculectomy Surgery (filtration surgery) -Trabeculectomy Surgery involves creating a new “filter system” for the drainage of the aqueous fluid behind the eye. During the surgery, a piece of tissue from the drainage angle of the eye is removed which creates an opening. A flap of tissue taken from the sclera (the white of the eye) and the conjunctiva (clear covering over the sclera) is then positioned to partially cover the opening. This new opening allows fluid to drain out of the eye which results in avoiding the clogged drainage channel. Once the fluid begins to drain into the new opening, a bubble is formed by the tissue rising. This bubble is then examined at every eye examination to ensure that the new drainage opening is working.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy, a common complication of diabetes, affects the blood vessels in the retina (the thin light-sensitive membrane that covers the back of the eye). This condition primarily occurs due to lack of oxygen flow to the retina. If untreated, it may lead to blindness. If diagnosed and treated promptly, blindness is usually preventable. There are two types: nonproliferative and proliferative retinopathy. Nonproliferative retinopathy is the less severe type in which there may be hemorrhages (bleeding) in the retina and leakage of blood or serum causing a "wet retina." As a consequence, vision may be diminished. Proliferative retinopathy is a more severe type of diabetic retinopathy. New abnormal fragile vessels develop on the surface of the retina and may grow toward the center of the eye. These vessels frequently bleed into the vitreous (the clear jelly in the center of the eye) and can cause severe visual problems. Treatment is by laser surgery or surgery on the vitreous. These techniques can slow the progression of diabetic retinopathy and sometimes will reverse visual loss. However, damage done may be permanent.

General Surgery
Although nerve damage and visual loss from glaucoma cannot be reversed, symptoms of the disease can be controlled with proper medications and treatment. Treatments such as eye drops, laser surgery ( Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty ), and general surgery ( Trabeculectomy ) can help to decrease the ocular pressure caused by glaucoma and can assist in the slowing down or stopping of further nerve damage and vision loss.
