Craniosacral Massage
Craniosacral therapy was developed in the early twentieth century by William Sutherland, an osteopathic physician. Dr. Sutherland observed that all of the bones in our skull have beveled edges, and hypothesized that the reason for this must be to allow for small movements of those bones. Dr. Sutherland examined many skulls, conducting experiments (often on himself!) that allowed him to measure these tiny movements. The movements are so small they are measured in microns (one micron is smaller than the width of a piece of paper). He determined that some movements are supposed to be there, and others are not. Injury, trauma, illness and stress all can cause restrictions in healthy movements of bones and tissue and result in unhealthy movements which contribute to disease. Most people enter a deep state of relaxation during the treatment and awake feeling refreshed as though they have just awoken from eight hours of sleep or as if they had a relaxing craniosacral massage.
