Located on the Delaware River in Historic New Castle, the Read House & Gardens is a 14,000 square foot mansion, completed in 1804 for George Read II, surrounded by 1.5 acres of formal gardens installed in 1848. Bequeathed to the Delaware Historical Society by Lydia Chichester Laird in 1975, the site underwent a state-of-the-art restoration campaign in the 1980s. In 2017 it was designated a National Historic Landmark for its outstanding Federal-style architecture.
