Medical conditions: Some medical conditions predispose those to dry eye syndrome including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid-related issues. Blepharitis is also a contributing factor to dry eyes.
Primary Care
Following graduation, Dr. Woldt pursued advanced training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami. This Ocular Disease Residency focused on treatment and management of ocular disease with emphasis on retina, cornea/anterior segment, glaucoma, neurologic disorders, and primary care. Dr. Woldt practiced at a clinic and surgery center in South Dakota for 7 years before relocating to Green Bay. He also served as Chairman of the Education Committee for the South Dakota Optometric Society during that time.
Smoking Cessation
The only proven treatment for glaucoma consists of reducing pressure in the eye with drops, laser treatments or surgery. Although not proven to have an impact on glaucoma, adopting a healthy diet and exercise regimen along with smoking cessation will improve your overall health and may have an impact on your long-term treatment.

Macular Degeneration
The macula is a part of the retina in the back of the eye that ensures that our central vision is clear and sharp. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) occurs when the arteries that nourish the retina harden. Deprived of nutrients, the retinal tissues begin to weaken and die, causing vision loss. Patients may experience anything from a blurry, gray or distorted area to a blind spot in the center of vision.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK improves vision safely and precisely by reshaping the cornea to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. Vision improves within minutes, and most patients eventually enjoy 20/20 vision or better after treatment.
Cataracts
Once a cataract is removed and replaced with a lens implant, it cannot grow back. Some patients may develop a clouded membrane just behind their lens implant during the months or years after surgery. This is called posterior capsule opacification, and is easily addressed using a short outpatient laser treatment.

Non-surgical treatments for dry eye include blinking exercises, increasing humidity at home or work, and use of artificial tears or moisturizing ointment. If these methods fail, small punctal plugs may be inserted in the corners of the eyes to limit tear drainage, or the drainage tubes in the eyes may be surgically closed. Eyelid surgery is also a solution if an eyelid condition is causing your dry eyes.
