She frequently lectures through the Boston University School of Medicine where she is a member of the content development team for their “SCOPE of Pain” lecture series and author of the New England Journal of Medicine “Knowledge+” review series in Pain Medicine. She has been a featured speaker at the Lahey Annual Review course in Internal Medicine, and has served as visiting professor, lecturing on the subject of non-surgical approaches to back pain. Dr. Bial has been awarded the title of Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Tufts University School of Medicine, and Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School. She was honored to be the Harvard Medical School 2006 recipient of the Hatem Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The hand consists of dozens of bones and joints, as well as ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, and cartilage, that work together to perform routine, everyday tasks. After her residency, Dr. Shah served as an anesthesiologist at CAP Anesthesia PC in Massachusetts for several years before completing an exclusive interventional pain management fellowship at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. Through this year of intensive training in the Department of Anesthesiology, she learned the latest, proven methods in managing pain with medications and state-of-the-art interventional procedures, such as joint injections, neck and spine injections, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, trigger point injections, and nerve electrical conduction procedures for pain.

Physician assistants are highly trained healthcare providers who work under the supervision of our orthopedic doctors to take medical histories; conduct exams; diagnose and treat bone, joint, and muscle injuries and conditions; order and interpret tests, such as X-rays and MRI; prescribe medications; and assist our doctors during surgery. Our PAs are trained to recognize when patients need the attention of a supervising doctor or additional specialist.

After Columbia, Dr. Spang was accepted to the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, where he studied orthopedics for five years at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He worked at the Boston VA hospital as well. He was selected chief resident of Beth Israel Hospital, and was chosen for the Best Basic Science Research Award on graduation.

Made up of a combination of muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and vertebrae, the neck, also referred to as the cervical spine, is an integral part of the musculoskeletal system as it supports our head and allows it to move. Dr. O’Holleran is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with dual fellowship training in advanced shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine. He specializes in shoulder procedures (with a special interest in arthroscopic reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, instability surgery, and complex open reconstructions) and sports medicine-related knee procedures (including arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, cartilage repair and joint preservation).

However, if conservative methods do not provide adequate relief and neck surgery is absolutely necessary to ensure a complete recovery, our neck surgeons are able to offer the latest advancements in state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgery that promotes an effective return to active living. Common neck procedures performed by our surgeons include cervical anterior discectomy and fusion; artificial disc replacement surgery; cervical laminectomy; cervical corpectomy; cervical microdiscectomy; and kyphoplasty.
Ankle Surgery
Following the completion of his residency, Dr. Karbassi completed his foot and ankle fellowship at the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. There, he specialized in arthroscopic and open reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. He helped treat professional athletes from the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, and several collegiate programs. While at the Hospital for Special Surgery, he continued his research endeavors, focusing on patient outcomes and helping them return to athletic participation after foot or ankle surgery. Dr. Karbassi served as a senior clinical associate in orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and was actively engaged in educating medical students and residents in training.
Joint Replacement
Determining whether to undergo total joint replacement surgery is a big decision, but one that can result in improved function and mobility. Joint replacement surgery entails replacing a diseased joint—most commonly hip, knee, or shoulder joints—with a well-designed and functional artificial implant. Joint replacement surgery is a necessary procedure when considerable cartilage loss occurs in your joint, causing bone-on-bone friction, debilitation, and overbearing pain. Additionally, revision joint replacement surgery is required when there's an infection in the replaced joint, instability in an implanted joint, or when a worn-down artificial joint needs to be replaced and improved.

His fellowship training was performed at the world-famous Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. At HSS, he spent time with pioneers in the field of hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery. Under the direction of nationally known Dr. Scott W. Wolfe, this elite fellowship provided incredible training. Dr. Prokopis was a senior clinical associate in orthopedic surgery for Weill Cornell Medicine, teaching the physicians of tomorrow. He was privileged to work intensely one on one with world-famous Dr. Andrew J. Weiland where he was fortunate to gain what Dr. Weiland has learned in his over 30 years of experience dealing with disorders of the hand and upper extremity. He spent dedicated time with Dr. Robert N. Hotchkiss, a pioneer in elbow surgery who has helped to change the way orthopedic surgeons view the elbow and its disorders. Dr. Edward Athanasian is unique for his diversified training in hand surgery as well as orthopedic oncology. Under the direction of Dr. Athanasian, Dr. Prokopis worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as part of his fellowship training. He also participated in caring for the New York Giants and New York Mets.

At the University of Toronto Faculty of Arts & Science in Canada, Dr. Bulczynski earned his undergraduate degree. He remained in Toronto to complete his Doctor of Medicine degree at University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine and underwent an orthopedic surgery residency at McGill University in Montreal. He then finished two spine surgery fellowships, spending his first year at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, and his second at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dr. Steve Mattheos is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at Sports Medicine North. He specializes in minimally-invasive surgical techniques involving the knee and shoulder. Dr. Mattheos’ clinical interests include arthroscopic and robotic surgery of the knee and shoulder.

Dr. Robert Spang is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in both advanced shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine. He treats any and all conditions related to the shoulder, knee, and sports medicine. Special interests in the shoulder include arthroscopic reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, instability, biceps injuries, and total shoulder replacement. Dr. Lacy has conducted research on cartilage biomechanics of the knee at the Detroit Medical Center Orthopaedic Laboratory. He has also led clinical studies related to hip replacement as a fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has authored and co-authored numerous orthopedic publications and book chapters, focusing on surgery of the hip and knee.
Knee Replacement
Dr. Lacy specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hip and knee arthritis and avascular necrosis, as well as infections and fractures of the hip and knee. He performs total hip and total knee replacement (arthroplasty) surgeries, as well as partial knee replacement surgeries. His fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital has given him the experience necessary to tackle complex revision hip and knee replacement surgeries as well. He also performs arthroscopic knee joint preservation procedures. He provides nonoperative treatments, such as hip and knee injections, and reserves surgery as an option only after nonoperative treatments have been attempted.

Dr. O’Flynn is a board-certified and fellowship-trained adult reconstruction surgeon. He has experience in the most advanced procedures for hip and knee conditions and injuries, including primary total joint replacement, primary total joint revision, and knee arthroscopy. Dr. O’Flynn uses his advanced training in hip and knee reconstructive procedures to help his patients return to their active lives.

He strives to answer all of his patients’ questions as clearly and concisely as possible. He will maximize nonsurgical methods of treatment for his patients prior to recommending surgical treatment. He regularly treats patients with injections, custom splints, dedicated hand and occupational therapy, and medications to maximize relief without surgery. When these methods do not provide relief, Dr. Prokopis will discuss, at length, the potential surgical options for his patients. These options include minimally invasive surgical techniques as well as reconstructive procedures for the entire upper extremity.
