I went to see Dr. Kharmouche because I needed gum surgery. Dr Kharmouche was so thorough and discussed the whole process with me in detail. He took excellent care of my teeth and I'm so happy with the results. I would highly recommend Dr. Kharmouche.

Dental Examination
It is a good idea to become familiar with the structures in your mouth so that you may be able to identify any areas that do not seem normal. Conducting periodic self-oral cancer screenings between dental exams can potentially help to diagnose areas of concern in the early stages of growth. Many forms of oral cancer are successfully treated when detected and diagnosed early.
Oral Cancer Screening
Benign conditions of the oral cavity can often mimic precancerous or cancerous lesions. Oral cancer screenings should be performed at least once per year, and more often if you are at an elevated risk of developing oral cancer. Your doctor may perform a number of tests or exams to determine the cause of any symptoms that you are experiencing and to diagnose the disease. Typically, a visual screening is first conducted to identify any abnormal areas. Intraoral pictures are often taken to help document the appearance of the lesion on that specific date. A biopsy or tissue removal is usually the best way to determine a diagnosis, as the sample is sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis.

Bridges
Dental implant technology is now seen as the preferred method of tooth replacement. No matter how many teeth you have lost to tooth decay, gum disease, or injury, dental implants are a comfortable and attractive solution. While dentures simply rest on your gums and fixed bridges rely on adjacent teeth for support, dental implants are surgically implanted into the jaw. This allows for maximum stability and reduces the risk of complications down the road.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
A gingivectomy is usually performed when a patient has severe periodontal or gum disease that has not responded well to other gum disease treatments including scaling and root planing or other periodontal procedures. Gingivectomies are a procedure that is typically provided by a periodontist.
Periodontal Surgery
Scaling and root planing therapy or periodontal surgery to remove plaque and tartar deposits from beneath the gum line
Deep Cleaning
The general steps of scaling and root planing treatment may include a local anesthetic to numb the areas that will be treated. Your doctor may suggest a form of sedation, if necessary. The treatment often requires hand instruments and an ultrasonic tool to remove the plaque and calculus accumulation. Your doctor or dental hygienist will use the instruments below the gum line to clean the roots of your teeth and smooth any rough surfaces. The goal of this deep cleaning process is to clear away plaque and tartar as well as smooth the surfaces of the teeth to encourage the gum tissues to reattach to the teeth.

Dentures
Implant supported dentures are basically removable dentures that are attached to a set of three or more dental implants. This means that it is possible to replace an entire arch of missing teeth with as little as three implants. Patients can still remove their dentures for maintenance or before bed. The only difference is that they are held firmly in place instead of just resting on the gums.

Dental Implants
Patients who have lost teeth in the upper premolar or molar areas of the jaw often require a sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, in order to have dental implants placed. As a result of bone loss, the sinuses can expand to occupy the empty space where the bone used to be. With insufficient bone to securely place a dental implant, a sinus lift is necessary to move the sinus away from the roots of the teeth or to create additional bone in the area.

Flap Surgery
Osseous surgery, or flap surgery, is usually performed when periodontal pockets around a tooth (or teeth) have not responded to other treatments. Also known as pocket depth reduction, this procedure is performed in order to create a clean environment around the tooth so that it can be retained rather than lost. The goal of osseous surgery is to reduce or eliminate periodontal pocketing. Osseous surgery is generally recommended after other treatments have been explored and attempted, and is usually performed when pocket depths have worsened over time or have not responded to other therapies.

Gum grafting is a type of gum surgery that involves taking a tissue sample from one area of the mouth and grafting it onto the gum line. There are three main types of gum grafting...
Osseous Surgery
Osseous surgery (or flap surgery) is performed on patients who have moderate or advanced periodontal disease. Typically, flap surgery is performed after scaling and root planing has been attempted but has not been successful in treating existing periodontal disease.
Tooth Extractions
Dental extractions are performed for a variety of reasons, including tooth decay, injury, infection, and for orthodontic treatment. Extractions are a relatively common procedure in most dental offices. The difficulty of the procedure varies depending on the case and the patient, however anesthesia is used to numb the area and prevent discomfort during the procedure.
Ridge Augmentation
Ridge augmentation is a common procedure performed to help recreate the natural contour of the gums. Often, after a tooth is removed, the bone in the jaw will begin to deteriorate and recede. The height and width of the socket, which was supported by the tooth, will begin to shrink after the tooth is removed. Many patients will eventually develop an indentation in the gums where the tooth used to be as a result of tooth and bone loss.
Bone Grafting
Before the procedure begins, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the site. In one form of the sinus lift procedure, the doctor will create a small opening in the bone to access the sinus cavity. Using a small instrument, the doctor will gently lift the sinus into a more favorable position. This procedure helps to encourage natural bone growth to fill the space created, but a bone grafting material is often placed beneath the newly raised sinus cavity along the existing bone. This grafting material will then mesh with your existing bone, thus creating more bone.

I have continued my passion for working with the periodontally involved as a dental hygienist. I really do love your gums as much, if not more, than my own!
