Maryland School for the Deaf, located in Frederick, Md., was established in 1868, and provides public education and programs for children and youth of up to 21 years, who are deaf or hard of hearing. It provides family education and early intervention programs for the identification of hearing impairments in infants and toddlers. The school provides various services, including home sessions, school-based play groups and parent support meetings, American sign-language classes, spoken English training and speech therapy. The school s counselors work with students in various aspects of student life, such as completing their daily tasks, practicing personal hygiene, and social etiquettes, tutoring students with their homework, and assisting students with time management. Maryland School for the Deaf coordinates after school activities for students, such as field trips, organizational meetings, intramural games and tournaments, clubs and community projects. The school also offers sports activities including football, volleyball, wrestling and baseball.
