Preventive Care

Dental Care
Students learn about the different aspects of veterinary medicine, including animal dentistry, radiology, laboratory science, exotic pet care, shelter medicine, and animal behavior Classes meet during the school year every other month and last 45 to 60 minutes. Registration is required for each meeting and class size is limited, so register early.
Vaccination
At Kingsbrook Animal Hospital, we value and encourage preventative care, including carefully tailored vaccination plans for dogs and cats. Vaccinating your pet keeps them healthy by preventing serious diseases. However, some vaccines may be unnecessary or unwise for your pet to receive. At Kingsbrook Animal Hospital, we conduct a risk analysis of your pet each time they visit to determine what, if any, vaccines are needed.
Behavioral Counseling
During a behavior consultation, we will review your pet’s medical history so that we can identify all of the possible contributing factors. Once a diagnosis has been made, we can formulate a treatment plan that works best for your pet and their lifestyle. Some solutions may include behavior modification techniques, adjustments to the home environment, or prescription medication. We will work closely with you with the behavior modification techniques recommended by our veterinarians, and address all of your questions and concerns. In preparation for your kitten’s first visit with us, it is helpful to bring the health information provided to you by the seller or shelter. Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Scientists spent years following the health of the dogs involved in the search for survivors. To their surprise, they found no increase in the risk of major illnesses such as respiratory disease and cancer in these dogs. This is in contrast to humans involved in the rescue and clean-up, in whom up to 70% suffered significant respiratory problems. There are many theories as to why this may be the case. One is that dogs’ noses are longer, possibly serving as a better filter to protect their lungs from toxic dust and debris.

Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Plaque and tartar that build-up on your pet’s teeth lead to painful gingivitis and progresses on to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that causes permanent damage including loss of teeth and damage to the bones of the jaw. It also leads to more serious conditions like heart and kidney disease.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
As dedicated pet owners ourselves, we understand how difficult it can be to make decisions regarding end-of-life care for our pets. As our pets age, they may develop conditions such as cancer, organ failure, osteoarthritis, dementia, or other age-related illnesses. When these conditions do not respond to treatment and cause significant discomfort for our pets, it may be necessary to begin hospice care.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Dr. Davis loves working with older pets, especially if he can help them enjoy a good quality of life in their later years. From arthritis and joint pain to chronic kidney disease, if there is a way to make your pet comfortable, he will try to find it.
Heart Disease Treatment

Kidney Disease Treatment
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Maxiguard Oral Cleansing Gel and CET Oral Hygiene Rinse are used to prevent bacterial growth and inflammation of the gums. Veterinary dentists love these products for pets with periodontal disease. Apply a small amount with a fingertip along teeth and gums daily.

Wound and Fracture Care
The hospital ward consisted of about 30 cages of dogs and cats with various injuries and ailments including broken bones, bite wounds, eye trauma, sepsis, and refeeding syndrome. Refeeding syndrome is a condition in which patients have gone so long without food that they actually get sick when food is re-introduced to them. Nora and I were also responsible for helping with new animals being admitted. These tasks included decontamination, placing IV’s, bandaging, and medicating. I think one of the most surprising things about our trip was the fact that it was 6 weeks after the hurricane, and animals were still being taken out of homes alive – albeit thin – treated for refeeding syndrome, and they still fared well! Although the week was exhausting and even a bit emotionally traumatic, it was the most rewarding, full experience I have had as a veterinary assistant.

Laser Surgery
Laser surgery is an advanced surgical tool that greatly reduces the swelling associated with traditional surgery. The benefits of laser surgery include: less pain, less bleeding, less swelling and discomfort, and a decreased chance of infection. Unlike traditional surgery with a scalpel or scissors, the light from the laser beam gently removes the tissue, making laser surgery a favorable method for many veterinary surgical procedures.
Declawing
Spaying and Neutering
Spay and neuter procedures can be done at most ages, but generally the best time is around six months of age. In recent years, however, this area has been the subject of much research, so talk to your veterinarian to find out if there are any recent findings which may affect the recommendation for your pet.
Veterinary Euthanasia

Laboratory Services
We recommend annual blood work for pets over eight years of age. In addition, pets needing general anesthesia are required to have blood work prior to anesthesia. Regular blood screenings allow you to detect infections and diseases in your pet, helping to prevent disease early. In many situations, early detection is essential for more effective treatment. The type of blood work will be determined specifically for each pet depending on his or her individual needs.
Dental Radiology
Kingsbrook Animal Hospital also utilizes digital x-rays during dental exams, which allows us to closely evaluate the teeth and look for disease that may not be visible to the naked eye. Digital dental radiology also helps us examine the anatomy of your pet’s gums, roots, and surrounding bone. Our veterinarians can then diagnose bone loss or hidden disease that may be present within the roots and other areas that may need advanced treatment.

Senior Pet Care
Preventive exams for your senior pet will prevent conditions and diseases that are common during the later years in life such as bone and joint problems, hormone disorders, cancer, and diseases of the kidney, heart, and liver. Because pets age at a faster rate than humans, our veterinians recommend biannual exams to look for any potential underlying conditions.
