Unfortunately many people "shop around" for the best price on a procedure without knowledge of why the cost may vary among veterinary practices. Often a lower cost procedure is associated with fewer safety precautions and infection controls and may cost less, but puts the patient at greater risk. Below are a few questions designed to help you to find the best fit between the veterinary practice where your pet will receive their procedure and your expectations for the care of your pet.
Vaccination
Noah's Ark Animal Hospital provides after-hours emergency service for established and active patients of our hospital. A pet is considered an active patient if they have received their annual physical and vaccinations at Noah's Ark within the last 18 months. Pets that have never been seen at Noah's Ark Animal Hospital, or have fallen to inactive status should call either the Capital District Animal Emergency Clinic in Latham, or the Northway Animal Emergency Clinic in Gansevoort.

Comprehensive Examination
When you bring your pet for their annual health maintenance examination it is often tempting to view updating vaccines as the main reason for the visit. Although updating your pet's immunity is important, it is the accelerated aging of pets that makes it so important to screen regularly for new health issues with a yearly physical examination. A general rule of thumb is that one year of time in your pet's life is equivalent to 6-7 years of a human's life. When you realize this, it is easily understood that a yearly physical examination for a pet is the equivalent of a human going to the doctor for a physical examination every 7 years. Obviously alot can change over that year's time. For example, in the year from your pet's puppy/kitten visit until the next year's exam, your puppy/kitten will have gone through the stages (equivalent to humans) from baby, through adolescence to early adulthood! Regular checkups are important even if your pet appears healthy because animals tend to hide signs of illness until the disease is quite advanced. Before our pets were domesticated, they learned to hide signs of their ailments to prevent being seen as weak or debilitated, which would make them a target for predators looking for their next meal. A veterinarian through a through physical examination (and sometimes diagnostic testing) is specially trained to pick up on subtle signs of illness that often goes unrecognized by those who care for a pet on a daily basis. For this reason, the annual health examination for pets that are 1-7 years of age centers around the physical examination, and as appropriate the following preventative care tests and treatments...

Every veterinarian has different overhead and pricing structures, so pricing of medication can vary from practice to practice. We have structured our pharmacy pricing such that in most cases (especially heartworm and flea/tick medication) our cost is either the same or even less than the most popular online pharmacies when all factors are considered. Product manufacturers almost always have veterinary exclusive promotions ($5 to $10 rebate off 12 doses of heartworm preventative or 1 to 2 doses of flea/tick product free with 6 pack purchase) that often brings our price lower. Depending on the amount of medication you are purchasing online you may also incur shipping costs which you will not incur when buying locally. Before you purchase online, be sure to ask a staff member for our pricing on the exact product you are comparing (same size and brand) so we can make you aware of any manufacturer offers that will usually result in the lowest price and save you money!
Pain Management
Pets that are to have preanesthetic testing will have blood and/or urine samples obtained and their testing begun, usually in the morning, so their test results are ready by the afternoon. Patients that are to have an IV catheter placed will have their leg (usually front) clipped and scrubbed with surgical scrub and a catheter placed to allow medication administration and fluid therapy that will help maintain blood pressure, replace blood loss, and keep the patient from becoming dehyrated. A preanesthesia calming medication is given to reduce anxiety and allow relaxation, reduce the chance of post anesthesia vomiting, and control excess salivation. Pre-procedure pain medication is given at this time, as appropriate.

Thyroid Disease Treatment
Perform wellness bloodwork yearly to screen for common metabolic problems such as kidney, liver or thyroid problems. Often disease can be detected before your pet is showing any signs, when it is most treatable.
Heart Disease Treatment
At the time the procedure is to begin, an injection is given to quickly anesthetize the patient (called induction). This allows intubation, which is the placement of a breathing tube down the patient's trachea, or windpipe. This tube protects from fluids entering the lungs, allows us to breathe for the pet (if necessary) and provides a way for administration of isoflurane gas that keeps the pet under anesthesia until the procedure is complete. Supplemental heat (to prevent hypothermia) is provided by way of a hot water blanket underneath the patient, and a warm air blanket placed overtop the patient. Intravenous fluids may be run through a fluid warmer as well. The patient is connected to an electronic monitor that will provide readings for EKG, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen level, exhaled carbon dioxide and, at times, blood pressure.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
First, you may ask, why does my pet need it's teeth cleaned? Just like people, pets need regular dental care to prevent infection, periodontal disease and tooth loss. Statistically, 80% of pets over the age of three show evidence of periodontal disease, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society. Unfortunately advanced periodontal disease is irreversible and can lead to other health problems. We don't just recommend cleaning a pet's teeth so they look nice and have good breath, although these are nice benefits of proper pet dental care. One of the main reasons dental care is important is that tartar that builds up in a pet's mouth causes inflammation of the gums. The bacteria and bacterial toxins associated with this tartar and inflammation have been shown to act as a slow poison to the liver, kidneys and sometimes heart which may not manifest as problems until years later. A periodic professional dental cleaning cleans the tartar and harmful bacteria off the teeth and out of the periodontal pockets (below the gum line) and is the best defense against this threat to your pet's internal organs.

Veterinary Surgery
Aftercare of surgical patients is very important for safety and healing. You should receive written discharge instructions for your pet that details things to expect and how to know if your pet may need to be checked for postoperative complications.

Laboratory Services
Before scheduling surgery for your pet (spay, neuter, lump removal, etc.) they will need to be examined by a veterinarian to determine their health status and fitness for anesthesia. Once the patient is cleared of any physical abnormalities they will be scheduled for their elective procedure. Depending on the pet's age, preanesthetic laboratory testing (e.g. blood testing) will be recommended, or may be required for safety. This testing can be done at the time of the presurgical visit, or may be performed the morning of the pet's procedure. One benefit of having the blood work done prior to the day of the procedure is that we can run blood clotting tests in addition to the regular testing, at no additional cost.

You will be presented with a procedure consent form that describes the procedure your pet is scheduled for as well as a section for you to make known your wishes for safety and comfort options (such as IV catheter, preanesthetic laboratory testing, microchipping, etc.). When your pet is here for scheduled services, there are other services that may be of benefit to the pet as well, including: microchipping, dental cleaning/issues addressed (if needed), correction of umbilical hernias, tear duct flushing, dewclaw removal, declaw for cats, nail trimming, ear hygiene (cleaning and/or plucking of hair), brushing out of mats, expressing anal sacs, or bathing. Doing these procedures while the pet is already anesthetized or sedated for another procedure can reduce the cost associated with these additional services. Be sure to request any of these additional services that you want your pet to have at the time of admission. The patient's vital signs and a recent history will be taken and recorded. A pet identification band will be placed around your pets neck and they will be admitted to the hospital ward. We will begin preparation for your pet's procedure, which typically takes place in the afternoon, and will call you mid to late afternoon when they are in recovery, to arrange a discharge time. It is very important that you provide us with a number to contact you at anytime throughout the day in the event questions or concerns arise.

Small Animal Vet
Dr. Stipe is a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (known as the heart of Amish country) and is owner/founder of Noah's Ark Animal Hospital. He holds a B.S. degree in Dairy and Animal Science from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (D.V.M.) degree from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine., which included a year of clinical study at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Stipe founded Noah's Ark Animal Hospital in the fall of 2000 as the culmination of a life-long dream. He has always had a love of animals and knew that he wanted to be a veterinarian since he was in kindergarten. Even though he is currently a small animal veterinarian, growing up in Lancaster county, Dr. Stipe gained extensive experience with, owned and showed dairy cattle, and enjoys any opportunity to spend time on the farm. Dr. Stipe has a special interest in anesthesia and surgery and was the recipient of the Small Animal Anesthesia Proficiency Award, an award given to one individual of each graduating class at Ross University.
