Cryotherapy
If the vitreous is clouded by blood, laser surgery cannot be used until the blood settles or clears. In some cases of bleeding into the vitreous, cryotherapy, or freezing, of the retina may help shrink the abnormal blood vessels.

Glaucoma
A YAG laser peripheral iridotomy is performed almost exclusively for patients with narrow angles, narrow angle glaucoma, or acute angle closure glaucoma. Aqueous fluid is made in the ciliary body of the eye, which is anatomically situated behind the iris. The aqueous fluid primarily escapes the eye by flowing between the lens and iris of the eye, and then drains via the trabecular meshwork, which is located in the angle of the eye (where the front clear cornea meets the iris, essentially).
Ophthalmology
Seven years of volunteering with the Boy Scouts, often lead by his father, earned him the rare distinction of Eagle Scout when he was 17. Already accustomed to working toward a goal, he entered into college contemplating medicine as a career. His work at the Alabama Eye and Tissue Bank during college solidified his decision to go to medical school and also led him to specialize in retina care after his ophthalmology residency.
Macular Degeneration
Photo-Dynamic Therapy (with Visudyne) (PDT) is an extremely beneficial therapy for "wet" macular degeneration that destroys the abnormal blood vessels without causing thermal (heat) damage to the overlying sensory retina. It uses a combination of a photoactive drug (a light-activated drug) and light from a non-thermal laser (a laser that does not burn the retina). Unlike other macular degeneration treatments, Visudyne therapy may work toward stabilizing vision. In other words, this treatment may confine and inhibit the progression of "wet" macular degeneration, and thereby preserve patients' vision.

Cataracts
Typically over the next 20-30 years, the lens will continue to harden and turn yellow. The lens has now progressed to the stage of a cataract, and our vision will gradually decrease. The only way to get rid of a cataract is to have it surgically removed and replaced with an intraocular lens. This procedure is usually also covered by insurance if vision requirements are met, which state vision must be 20/50 or worse with or without glare.
