Primary Care
NORTHERN VIRGINIA DOCTORS OF OPTOMETRY and Dr. Smithson have become a worldwide leader in treatment and rehabilitation of post-concussive vision syndrome. Post concussive vision syndrome is defined as suffering from visual effects post concussion outside of the acute phase of concussion when spontaneous recovery is expected. Dr. Smithson does not diagnose or serve as a primary care provider in suspected head injury. He administers treatment and therapy during the patient’s rehabilitation.

Dr. Kuchem graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Highest Distinction. She earned both a Masters in Vision Science and her Doctorate of Optometry from The Ohio State University College of Optometry. After working for three years at the University of Kansas Medical Center as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, she and her husband moved back to Virginia where she has been in private practice ever since. She enjoys practicing general optometry with a special emphasis on myopia management, specialty contact lens fits, and ocular disease. She is currently a member of the American and Virginia Optometric Associations, the Northern Virginia Optometric Society, the Virginia Academy of Optometry, the American Academy of Optometry, and a Diplomate in the American Board of Optometry. In her free time, she enjoys building Magnatile towers and discovering new playgrounds with her husband and two small children.
Macular Degeneration
According to research, 60% of people today spend as much as 6 hours a day in front of a digital screen, such as computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. All of these devices emit blue light, which is a known cause of digital eye strain and computer vision syndrome. This can also lead to other issues, such as sleep disruptions, dizziness, and other potential dangers to the eyes, including macular degeneration. Blue light can also come from other objects, like electronic devices, artificial lighting, television screens, and even the sun.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is an outpatient refractive surgery procedure to permanently correct vision, working by reshaping the eye’s front surface, the cornea. When the cornea is flattened, for instance, a reduction in nearsightedness or myopia is observed.
Cataracts
Cataracts are an eye condition characterized by cloudy lens, which makes things around you appear hazy, blurry, or less colorful. This happens because instead of light rays entering the eyes being focused onto the retina, they are scattered throughout the eye.
Cataract Surgery
If vision becomes hazy years after cataract surgery, it is typically caused by the capsule, the part of the eye responsible for holding the IOL in place, growing cloudy. Vision can be restored through a laser procedure called capsulotomy.
Eye Exam
Taking care of your eyes starts with a thorough eye examination. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), children should have their first eye exam at 6 months age, another exam at age three, and again at the start of school. Kids with generally good eye health should then continue to have their eyes checked every year. We also recommend a routine eye exam every year for adults of all ages.

Dr. Giles, a Pennsylvania native, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Gettysburg College and her doctorate from the State University of New York College of Optometry in New York City. Her specialties include the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, the fitting of hard and soft toric/ bifocal contact lenses, LASIK co-management, and general practice optometry. Dr. Giles is a member of the American Optometric Association (including the Cornea and Contact Lens Section) and the Virginia Optometric Association. Dr. Giles currently serves as secretary for the Northern Virginia Optometric Society.

Vision Therapy is a type of physical therapy for the brain and eyes used to address common visual problems, such as lazy eye, convergence insufficiency, and eye movement disorders. It can also aid in easing learning disabilities by targeting visual issues that get in the way of reading, learning and general educational instruction. At NVDO, we offer vision therapy with Dr. Smithson in Alexandria and Reston.
