There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop flatfoot. Those who have diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis have an increased risk of flatfoot development. Other factors include aging and obesity.
Plantar Fasciitis
When small tears occur on the fascia, it may become inflamed, especially if too much pressure is put on the tissue. Itâ€™s extremely important that you seek professional help as soon as you feel any type of foot pain. If plantar fasciitis is left untreated, thereâ€™s a high chance you may develop chronic heel plan. You may also develop other issues connected with your foot, knee, hip, or back, all due to the body walking differently to relieve pain felt from plantar fasciitis.

If you have plantar warts, your podiatrist may try different treatment methods depending on your specific case. Some treatments for plantar warts are peeling medicines (salicylic acid), freezing medicines (cryotherapy), or surgical procedures. Laser treatments and vaccines are also used to treat plantar warts.

Clubfoot is a congenital disorder that occurs in 1 out of 1,000 births per year. In newborns, the condition presents as the foot appearing as if it was rotated incorrectly at the ankle*. Several different factors cause clubfoot. Normally, clubfoot occurs due to genetics; however, some environmental factors are a possibility as well. Breech presentation and the position of the baby in a womb can cause clubfoot, as well as certain connective tissue disorders. This abnormality is often noticed during an ultrasound of the pregnancy at the 20th week.
MRI
If you have neuropathy, you should be on the lookout for these signs and symptoms: redness, swelling, the affected foot feels warmer than the other, sometimes pain or soreness. Sounds like an infection, doesn't it! That's right, Charcot changes occur and may often be mistaken for an infection. That is why careful evaluation by our top podiatrist is necessary to be sure you receive the correct treatment. Most commonly, x-rays are taken to see the breakdown of bones in the foot*. With Charcot in the beginning stages, it may be difficult to see on x-ray, so an MRI or CT may be ordered. For advanced changes, the x-rays are unmistakable.

Diagnosis for flat feet is usually done by a series of tests by your podiatrist. Your podiatrist will typically try an x-ray, CT scan, ultrasound, or MRI on the feet. Treatment is usually not necessary for flat foot unless it causes pain. However, therapy is often used for those who experience pain in their flat feet. Some other suggested treatment options are arch supports, stretching exercises, and supportive shoes.

Bunion Surgery
Bunions
Bunions are most commonly formed in people who are already genetically predisposed to them or other kinds of bone displacements. However, even if you do not have a history of this in your family, you can still develop bunions if you are wearing improperly fitting shoes. This can happen as you try to cram your feet into high heels, or by running or walking in a way that causes too much stress on the feet. High heels are another major culprit in the formation of bunions. Not only do they push the big toe inward, but your body weight and center of gravity is shifted towards the edge of your feet and your toes, which can cause bone displacement.
Ingrown Toenails
Foot pain and symptoms in children is not common compared to adults due to the flexibility and resilience of the tissues. Ingrown toenails can occur and will probably need treatment. Non-specific growing pains in the leg* are a common complaint of children, often causing a deep ache like leg pain* during the night. There are some specific causes of growing pains, especially in the heel, called Sever's disease or calcaneal apophysitis and at the knee, where its called Osgood-schlatters disease. Clubfoot is a relatively rare deformity at birth that may still cause problems in later life after correction. Feet that sweat profusely or have a smelly odor can also be a problem in the older child.

Corns
If you happen to wear tight fitting shoes or tend to stand for the majority of your day, itâ€™s likely that you may develop a foot condition known as a corn. When frequent friction or pressure is put on the foot, a small, hardened lump may form in that area. A corn may have a yellow hue and can typically be found on the side of the toes, as well as on the bottom of the feet. Though they are generally harmless, corns can often bring many patients discomfort.
Ulcer
Charcot (pronounced shar-ko) foot is a complete collapse of the bones in the foot* that occurs from neuropathy. Neuropathy is severe nerve damage that can be caused from numerous conditions, most commonly diabetes. With neuropathy, there is a complete loss of sensation in the foot* which allows the bones to become soft. Once this process starts, the foot will begin to change in shape often giving it a rocker-bottom appearance where the arch is actually the lowest part of the foot. This becomes difficult to walk on and is an area of high pressure which then can lead to skin breakdown known as an ulcer.
Calluses
A callus may form in a couple of different ways. People who often walk around barefoot develop calluses in place of shoes to protect the structural integrity of their feet. Calluses might also develop on the underside of your toes, what is called the metatarsal head. These callus formations can be caused due to uneven distribution of pressure by the toes and is often seen in flatfooted patients. Other times, calluses are simply the product of ill fitting shoes or socks. This can be amplified by working or exercising for extended periods of time in shoes that aren't practical.
Fungus
Fungal toenails form due to an infection that gets in between either the cracks in the nail or possible cuts on the surrounding skin. When this occurs, itâ€™s likely to discolor and thicken the nail; this makes it hard to care for or trim. The nail itself may also become brittle and could potentially crumble. The fungus under the nail may build over time, separating the nail from the bed and ultimately causing it to fall off if not treated properly.

If you suspect you have plantar warts, you may have the following symptoms: pain or tenderness while walking, a lesion that interrupts the ridges in the skin of your foot, small fleshy lesions on the bottom of the foot, or a callus where a wart has grown inward over a well-defined spot on the skin.

Calcaneus fractures are almost always the result of high-energy injuries. They usually occur as a result of a fall from a height, such as falling from a ladder. Other causes of a calcaneus fracture include automobile accidents and sports injuries such as long distance running. Some calcaneus fractures can be associated with other injuries to the bones of the thigh, leg, or even the spine.
Physical Therapy
Treatment of shin splints may involve various techniques, which include: resting the area applying ice to control inflammation physical therapy/athletic training treatments correcting any underlying postural distortions that may aggravate or contribute to the injury (knee hyperextension, weak abdominal muscles, anterior or posterior tilted pelvis, pronation/supination of the foot, etc.) With stress fractures, rest for the injured area is the only treatment that will allow the bone to heal. It may be necessary to unload the stress for a period of time by using crutches or a walking boot. A lack of pain does not mean that the bone has healed (many people do not report symptoms). A dancer should consult with their physician prior to returning to dance. Upon return to dance, the dancer should not experience any pain. If the dancer resumes activity too quickly, the stress fracture is more likely to progress to a complete bone fracture.

Ankle sprains* are the most common type of ankle injury* for dancers. Ankle sprains* involve the lateral (outside) structures of the ankle* and occur when the ankle* is inverted (turned or rolled outwards). A lateral ankle sprain* is the result of tears to any of the lateral stabilizing ligaments. Sprains are graded 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree (3rd degree being the most severe) depending on the involvement and integrity of these ligaments.

Athletes, or those who are frequently involved in sporting activities, are generally at a higher risk of getting a foot injury. Overuse and intense pressure put on the muscles, ligaments, and tendons of the lower extremity region are typically caused by repetitive motions. This in turn will often cause stress and lead to injury of the foot. Some of the most common injuries caused by sporting activities include ankle sprains, peroneal tendonitis, stress fractures, chronic ankle instability, heel pain, injury to the Achilles tendon, and injury to the sesamoid bones.

This condition, medically known as Posterior Impingement Syndrome, occurs when the tissue become compressed at the back of the ankle*. This pinching or compression is caused by a bony formation at the back of the ankle*. The pain may be triggered by an ankle sprain* or by the tissue being trapped between the ankle* and heel bone. When the soft tissue at the back of the ankle* is pinched it becomes inflamed and painful. Posterior Impingement Syndrome is common among ballet dancers. Bunions are quickly and easily diagnosed by podiatrists. However, because of their nature, they can appear similar to arthritic conditions or gout. A blood test is sometimes required to fully diagnose a bunion. A full radiological or x-ray exam could also be done by a podiatrist to examine the bone structure of your feet. One thing that is looked for specifically is an enlargement of that base joint or evidence of the big toe bone being pushed inward.

Hammertoes get their name due to the abnormal appearance of the toe, in which it bends down like a hammer. A hammertoeâ€™s shape is formed by a deformed bending in the toeâ€™s middle joint. There are many factors that play into how hammertoes form. Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, jamming, or breaking it, can make the toe more susceptible to developing into a hammertoe. Age and gender also influence the likelihood of getting a hammertoe. Women have also been known to be more likely to develop a hammertoe compared to men. Youâ€™re also more likely to develop this condition as you age. Certain diseases, such as arthritis and diabetes, have been known to influence the likelihood of forming a hammertoe.
Heel Spurs
The arch is made up of bones and joints, which are held tightly together, in a precise relationship. When it is subjected to repeated abnormal weight, or the normal weight of a lifetime, the force breaks up this normal relationship, causing bones to shift and joints to buckle. This allows the arch to collapse, and produces pain. The ability of the arch to absorb the shock of each step is reduced, so that continued walking will eventually produce pain in the knee, hip, and lower back. The above categories will eventually cause this to happen. Arch pain can also be a manifestation of heel spur or nerve injury in the heel area. You can also have certain types of benign growths that can cause arch pain i.e. plantar fibromatosis.

Metatarsalgia is characterized by pain and tenderness along the ball of the foot. For dancers, this is commonly caused by instability in the joints of the smaller toes. Repeated sprains and overstretched ligaments can lead to laxity, or increased flexibility in these joints. For a dancer, years of overwork and forcing of extreme motion in the foot can increase laxity and may cause subluxation of these joints.

Flexible flatfoot or a pronated foot in children is usually painless in young children, but may cause an ache, especially if the child is overweight or older. In the very young child, there is often a 'fat pad' in the arch area of the foot which gives an appearance of a flat foot, when it is not. If the foot also rolls inward at the ankle* (pronates), then this may be cause for concern. In the majority of cases, most will grow out of it, but some do not. At Southeast Podiatry, we can treat with foot orthotics if indicated its severe, causing symptoms and if both parents have flat feet, as this indicates that they may be less likely to grow out of it.

Arch pain is often felt as a burning sensation under the long arch of the foot. There are several of causes of this. The most common is plantar fasciitis, but can also be due to the strain of any structure in the arch of the foot.
Podiatric Deformities
Neuromas can be caused by anything that causes compression or irritation of the nerve. A common cause is wearing shoes with tapered toe boxes or high heels that force the toes into the toe boxes. Physical activities that involve repeated pressure to the foot, such as running or basketball, can also create neuromas. Those with foot deformities, such as bunions, hammertoes, or flatfeet, are more likely to develop the condition.
