Primary Care
A. You should avoid the "last supper" syndrome in the period prior to your surgery. This can lead to significant weight gain and greater difficulty in performing your surgery. We ask that patients stop smoking at least three weeks prior to your date of surgery. You are expected to start a clear liquid diet on the day before surgery. You may not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night prior to surgery unless otherwise instructed. If you are taking medications, please consult your surgeon or primary care physician for instructions on whether to take your medicine on the day of surgery.

A. The procedure takes an average of two hours to perform but may vary depending on your BMI. The whole process from the time you come in to the operating room to the time you arrive in recovery is much longer to account for anesthesia and awakening afterwards. Therefore, your loved ones should expect to talk to the surgeon approximately 2.5 to 3 hours after you leave them. After the recovery room you will go to the surgical floor. On the day after your surgery, you will go to the radiology department for a special X-ray, (UGI), to test your anastomosis. If your test is negative, you will begin your sugar free clear liquid diet. Most patients are able to tolerate an adequate amount of liquids by post op day #2 and will be discharged.

General Surgery
General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on the abdominal intestines and the torso. The types of surgeries include, but are not limited to, the stomach, esophagus, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, skin, breast and hernias. We, at North Jersey Laparoscopic Associates, pride ourselves on using the most up-to-date surgical procedures - referred to as minimally invasive techniques. These types of surgeries are therefore often called Minimally Invasive Surgeries (MIS).
Wound Care
A. You will not have any tubes in your nose or your bladder. There are no sutures or staples to be removed. The incisions will be covered with Steristrips that should be left alone. You may shower 24 hours after the surgery and wash with warm, soapy water.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally Invasive Surgery, also known as MIS or advanced laparoscopic surgery is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions (usually 0.5 - 1.5 cm) using one video camera and small instruments. All patients requiring an intra-abdominal surgery should be considered for a laparoscopic surgery due to the signifi cant improvement in outcome both short and long-term.
Joint Replacement
The additional weight placed on joints, particularly the knees and hips, results in rapid wear and tear as well as pain from inflammation. This may eventually require joint replacement. Similarly, bones and muscles of the back are constantly strained, resulting in disk problems, pain and decreased mobility. Many orthopedic surgeons refuse to perform joint replacements in morbidly obese people until they have lost a significant amount of weight.

I graduated from NYU Medical School in 1996 and went on to do a General Surgery Residency at Saint Vincent's Medical Center in New York City. I became interested in Advanced Laparoscopy and decided to pursue additional training. I did a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopy at Montefiore Medical Center's Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery in New York. It was there that I was introduced to Bariatric Surgery.
Reconstructive Surgery
Norberto Luke Soto, MD is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Soto's academic accomplishments include his grauation from Rutgers College of Pharmacy, summa cum laude. He later obtained his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as a member of the prestigious honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. After medical school graduation, Dr. Soto went through years of extensive training in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, gaining invaluable experience in Philadelphia at Temple University Hospital, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Fox Chase Cancer Center. He then completed a Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, New York.

The 11's, are vertical lines that appear between your brows and result from muscle contractions. All patients that lose a significant amount of weight, whether it is rapidly or slowly will experience some degree of loose skin. Exercise can definitely help especially to maintain tone but usually will not completely prevent loose skin. This is a very individual process and depends on the degree of damage to your skin. You should not plan to consider plastic surgery until you are within 20-30lbs of your goal weight. Patients after (PRP) in the face notice their skin rejuvenated, lifted, tightened and glowing as if they have had a non surgical face lift. Ulcer
A. Yes. Most medications are safe to take after surgery. Tablets or capsules larger than half an inch must be broken or dissolved during the immediate postoperative period. Aspirin, Motrin, and Advil are to be avoided except under rare exceptions because of ulcer risk.
