Selective laser trabeculoplasty uses a neodymium: YAG laser to focus light energy on the internal drainage channel of the eye. SLT targets the pigmented (melanin-containing) cells in the trabecular meshwork using a very short application of light. Because SLT uses a low amount of energy, the surrounding tissue is not damaged. The treatment allows the drain to work more efficiently, successfully lowering eye pressure by approximately 30 percent with effectiveness generally lasting between one to five years, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation.

Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration affects the macula, the central area of the retina. It occurs when the macular tissue deteriorates or when abnormal blood vessels develop in the macula. Over time, these problems can cause blurred or distorted vision. While macular degeneration cannot be cured, it can be managed with low-vision aids and other medical, laser, and surgical treatments, depending on the degree of degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
Pocono Eye Associates currently has three offices – conveniently located in East Stroudsburg, Tobyhanna, and Brodheadsville – that are easily accessible from all over the Pocono region and the Lehigh Valley. We provide refractive surgery, cosmetic procedures, and general ophthalmology, with treatment options ranging from comprehensive eye exams to laser eye surgery. Each facility has an in-office optical shop and contact lens dispensary where patients can choose their frames and receive prescription glasses and contact lenses without having to make extra trips to outside specialists.
Cataracts
Until recently, nearly everyone received the same type of Intra Ocular Lens Implant (IOL) for cataracts, but today, there are advanced lens choices that offer more options than ever before. New IOLs, such as Acrysof® IQ Restor® Multifocal, can treat cataracts and correct additional vision problems, offering excellent near, intermediate, and distance vision—even without glasses or contacts.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a quick outpatient procedure that removes the cloudy natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens. To begin the surgery, patients are given a light sedative and anesthetic eye drops. When the eye is completely numb, the doctor places an eyelid holder to keep the eye open. Next, the doctor makes a tiny incision in the eye and removes the lens. The IOL is then inserted and rotated into place. Stitches are usually not necessary since the incision is self-sealing.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic patients are more prone to having retinal diseases. Diabetic retinopathy is a degenerative disease that damages the retinal blood vessels, thus inhibiting the retina’s ability to transmit images. Symptoms range from mild blurred vision to total loss of vision. Treatment for diabetic retinopathy depends on how far the disease has progressed and can include laser treatment of the blood vessels.
