Braces
Commonly, the muscle that tethers the upper and lower lips to the gums attaches too close to the teeth. A frenectomy is performed to re-position the attachment above the smile line so that space closure can be achieved and maintained. With the muscle attached between the teeth, the two front teeth tend to spread apart after the braces are removed creating a “gap-toothed” appearance. In the lower jaw, a soft tissue grafting is typically placed to re-position the frenum and fix the problem. The procedure is quick, relatively pain-free, and can be performed in the office with light sedation on children as young as five years old.
