Glaucoma is a chromic degenerative eye disease that is most commonly associated with an elevated pressure inside the eye- Intraocular Pressure (IOP)- that damages the optic nerve and causes loss of vision. More than three million Americans are living with glaucoma, 2.7 million of whom-aged 40 and older-are affected by its most common form, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) which begins without any symptoms or obvious loss of vision. It is critical to diagnose and treat glaucoma as early as possible through regular eye exams in order to prevent vision loss. With early detection, diagnosis & treatment, in the vast majority of cases, glaucoma vision loss can be controlled or prevented.

Cataracts
Dr. Cohen and Dr. Nachbar perform the latest cataract surgical techniques in our surgicenter. Most operations are done without using needles for anesthesia (the “Topical Anesthesia” technique). These patients don’t need to wear an eye patch after having surgery. Our preferred surgical technique doesn’t even require sutures (the “no stitch” technique).

Eye Exam
Your vision should stabilize during your 20s and 30s, although women could experience visual changes during pregnancy. During this life period, an eye exam is recommended every two years, except if you have a family history of eye disorders or wear contact lenses. Those with diabetes should have a dilated eye examination every year, or follow the recommendations of a medical professional should more frequent eye exams be necessary.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Tractional Retinal Detachment may occur when fibrous or fibrovascular scar tissue has been formed on the retina as a result of an injury, inflammatory disease or the presence of neovascularization, such as in Diabetic Retinopathy. The scar tissue actually pulls the Retina free from the underlying pigment layer it is normally attached to, causing a Retinal Detachment.

He has served as a past President of the Burlington County (NJ) Medical Society. Dr. Colucciello is currently a section editor for the journal Retinal Physician, as well as a scientific reviewer for the American Journal of Ophthalmology (AJO), and the journal Retina. He serves on the Editorial Board for the journals The Physician and Sports Medicine and Postgraduate Medicine.
