The Legal Aid Society of Columbus provides legal assistance in civil cases to low-income individuals who cannot afford to hire an attorney in Columbus, Ohio. The society does not handle criminal cases. People seeking counsel must meet income and resource limits to be eligible for legal assistance. The Legal Aid Society of Columbus was organized in 1954 by a group of private lawyers who were volunteering legal services to the poor in the community. The society serves a financially eligible area of approximately 183,000 people. The Legal Aid Society of Columbus is a nonprofit organization that receives funding from the Legal Services Corporation and from the United Way of Central Ohio. State funding is from the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation. It also receives funding from The Columbus Bar Foundation and the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence, as well as other grants and funds.
