So what can we do to protect our teeth since just about everything we eat has sugar in it? The answer to that is very simple. Besides trying to minimize the amount of sugar we consume and the length of sugar exposure, we need to brush and floss at least twice a day and use fluoridated tooth paste. Fluoride remineralizes tooth enamel, making it more acid resistant. We also need to visit the dentist twice a year. Teeth that have been cleaned thoroughly of sticky plaque and rough tartar are more cavity resistant. Your dentist can detect early signs of decay before full-fledged cavities form. Fluoride treatments and sealants may also be prescribed to provide added protection against tooth decay.

Crowns
The simplest bridge involves the replacement of one tooth and is a three unit restoration. It replaces the tooth by having two crowns, also known as caps, attached to a false tooth. The false tooth is called a pontic and the two supporting teeth are called abutments. The abutment teeth must be reduced in size in order for the bridge to fit over them. The bridge is usually made with a metal substructure and porcelain fused over it. While it may look like three separate teeth, they are all connected. This is one of the disadvantages of the bridge. Flossing is more difficult to do as it requires special devices to be fed under the pontic. Another disadvantage is the need to cut down two teeth. If the teeth involved have large and old failing fillings in them, then covering them with crowns is a benefit. However, if the teeth involved are perfectly fine, cutting them down is not something that a dentist generally likes to do.
Bridges
Socket preservation helps maintain alveolar architecture. It reduces loss of ridge width and height following tooth removal. The result is that more costly ridge augmentation procedures are generally not necessary. The site will be more ideal for implant placement. Minimizing post extraction bone loss also results in better esthetics whether the area is restored with an implant or with a traditional fixed bridge.

Root Canal Treatment
Pediatric dentists have greater expertise to handle problems specific to children such as developmental difficulties and root canals on adult teeth that have not fully formed. They’re trained to use sedatives specifically for children and can treat children under general anesthesia. They have advanced skills when dealing with a child’s behavior or special healthcare needs. They are more likely to have affiliations with hospitals and established relationships with pediatricians and are typically paid more because of their additional training and special temperament required to effectively treat children.

Deep Cleaning
If you have periodontal disease, your dentist will have likely recommended scaling and root planing (“deep cleanings”) to remove the plaque and tartar from the roots of the involved teeth. This procedure helps to reduce bacterial counts and results in decreased inflammation and decreased pocket depths. In addition, some illnesses, including diabetes, tuberculosis and kidney and liver disorders, may also lead to bad breath. We can determine whether the problem is of dental origin and, if not, we will direct you to a physician for further evaluation and treatment.

Some patients are not sure which option to go with. The goal of this article is to help understand the advantages and disadvantages of each form of treatment.

Bone Grafting
There are two important steps that can be taken to reduce the amount of resorption and preserve the socket. The first is the method that is used to extract the tooth. This relies on the skill of the surgeon to remove the tooth as carefully as possible so as not to fracture the delicate plate of bone covering the facial root of the tooth. The second step is a procedure called socket preservation or bone grafting. A bone replacement material is added to the extraction site. The socket is filled with bone or bone substitute. It is then covered with gum, artificial membrane, or tissue stimulating proteins to encourage the body’s natural ability to repair the socket. The bone graft maintains the space of the extraction socket during healing while acting as a scaffold for new bone formation. The socket then heals with minimal shrinkage and collapse of surrounding gum and facial tissue.

Orthodontics
Orthodontics can also correct an improper bite, which can put pressure on your teeth and cause joint discomfort or can lead to premature wear of tooth surfaces.
Invisalign Orthodontics
Being able to remove them makes it much easier to maintain good oral hygiene and periodontal health while undergoing treatment. The downside is that they must be worn in order to work and compliance is very important. Invisalign is not a good choice for a child or teenager who may forget to wear them or may even lose them.
Braces
For many young people with poorly aligned teeth, wearing braces is just one more adolescent rite of passage. Yet today more adults are also realizing the benefits of choosing to “grin and bear it.” The number of people over the age of 21 who have chosen orthodontic treatment has increased dramatically within the last decade.

Teeth Whitening
Modern methods of whitening began in the 1980’s when dentists stumbled upon bleaching. They noticed that the hydrogen peroxide used to treat gum disease made teeth whiter. Peroxide was then incorporated into gels and is now available in many types of whitening systems, including whitening tooth-pastes, over-the-counter gels, rinses, strips, and trays and products used in the dental office. Hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide or both are the active ingredient in almost all whitening products. It is not completely understood how whitening products work but it is believed that these agents diffuse through enamel and dentin. They seep into the “pores” of the enamel and dentin and clarify the organic material by breaking down molecules. Double- carbon bonds in organic matter that builds up in the tubules (“pores”) of your teeth over time absorb light and give teeth their yellowed appearance. It is believed that peroxide breaks these bonds creating single-carbon bonds that reflect light and make teeth appear brighter.

She graduated from the Nassau Boces Westbury Program in 1989 after completing two years of study and a 3 month clinical rotation at Nassau University Medical Center. Tracy, a pro at setting people at ease loves her interactions with patients. She’s always eager to learn new dental procedures and techniques, and is eager to explore the myriad of dental materials available to ensure a pleasant yet medically effective patient experience. She can be found throughout the office as her strong clinical and technical skills are complimented by front office competency. In her time away from the office, Tracy loves being with her husband and three children, enjoys reading, cooking, and very often can be found in the dog park with Cody, her miniature dachshund.
