When you look at your tooth in the mirror, what you see is the crown, which is made of enamel and dentin. The rest of the tooth is hidden beneath the gum line, which is called the root. Inside the root(s) are small, thin passageways containing pulp tissue that branch off from the top chamber through the root tip.

Root Canal Treatment
With the appropriate care, your teeth that have had root canal therapy will last as long as other natural teeth. Yet, a tooth that has received treatment may fail to heal. Sometimes pain may continue to exist, and may occur months or years after treatment. If so, Endodontic Retreatment may be needed.
Apicoectomy
There are many surgical procedures that can be performed to save a tooth. The most common is called an apicoectomy, or root-end resection, which is occasionally needed when inflammation or infection persists in the bony area around the end of your tooth after a root canal procedure. In this microsurgical procedure, Dr. Lepore opens the gum tissue near the tooth to see the underlying bone and to remove any inflamed or infected tissue. The very end tip of the root is also removed. A small filling will be placed to seal the end of the root canal. A bone graft is used with platelet rich growth fibrin to assist healing. Over a period of months, the bone heals around the end of the root. Most patients return to their normal activities the next day. Postsurgical discomfort is generally mild.

A dental implant is actually a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed. They are used to secure crowns (the parts of teeth seen in the mouth), bridgework or dentures by a variety of means. They are made of titanium, which is lightweight, strong and biocompatible, which means that it is not rejected by the body. As a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists Dr. Lepore is uniquely qualified to plan, prepare and place implants to restore function and help insure your oral health.

Surgery often requires sedation. At Advanced Endodontic Solutions we are licensed in IV sedation and oral sedation. We have completed the DOCS sequence of courses, attend didactic courses at ADSA every year with SIM man emergency scenarios, trained at Montifiore Oral Surgery Department in IV sedation and trained with dental anesthesiologists in advanced IV sedation and airway management. We have also been trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and basic life support training.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, as well as a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, two of the highest professional certifications in his field. Dr Lepore is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow of the Misch Implantology Institute and has achieved the status of Recognized Specialist from the Kois Center for Continuing Education. In addition Dr. Lepore holds a Master of the College of Sedation in Dentistry. He is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Nitrous Oxide and oral sedation as well as an advanced certification in IV Sedation.
