However, if you have additional risk factors i.e. diabetes, hypertension, family history of diabetes or hypertension, family history of cataract or glaucoma, are in a visually demanding job or job that may be hazardous to your eyes, are taking medications that may have side effects affecting the eyes, have reading or learning difficulties, headache, squinting, tired eyes, need glasses for near-sightedness at an early age, or a family history of refractive error, you may need more frequent eye examinations.

You should have regular eye exams every 1-2 years depending on your medical condition and recommendations made by your doctor. In our community-based endocrinology practice (CBEP) a retrospective chart audit of 395 consecutive patients seen for diabetes mellitus over 5 years, 2000-2004, revealed that 47.1% achieved HbA1C goal of <7% vs. NHANES 1999-2000: 37%, p = 0.003; blood pressure goal of <130/80 53.2% vs. NHANES 1999-2000: 35.8%, p< 0.0001; total cholesterol <200mg/dL 82% vs. NHANES 1999-2000: 48.2%, p < 0.0001, and all three ABCs CBEP: 22% vs. NHANES 1999-2000 7.3%, p < 0.0001. The proportion of patients meeting all 3 ABCs goals in our practice significantly increased from 12.4% in 2000 to 23.6% in 2004 (p < 0.0001). When NHANES was updated for 1999-2002 similar results were observed for blood pressure (CBEP: 53.2% vs. NHANES 1999-2002 39.6% p < 0.0001), LDL cholesterol (CBEP: 68.8% vs. NHANES 1999-2002: 36% p < 0.0001). The proportion of patients achieving A1C goals was similar (CBEP: 47.1% vs. NHANES 1999-2002: 49.8%)

Thyroid testing should also be done in individuals with a goiter, diabetes mellitus, vitiligo, pernicious anemia, prematurely gray hair, and individuals taking medications such as lithium, amiodarone, iodine containing medications, kelp, following exposure to iodinated contrast agents. Individuals with a family history of thyroid disease, pernicious anemia, adrenal insufficiency, and diabetes mellitus would also benefit from testing.

American Thyroid Association Guidelines For Thyroid Nodules and Cancer: Thyroid cancer occurs in 5-10% of thyroid nodules depending on age, gender, radiation exposure, family history, and other factors. (A thyroid nodule is defined as a discrete lesion with in the thyroid gland that is palpable or ultrasonographically distinct from the surrounding parenchyma).
