Ophthalmologists

Cataracts
Two main types of ultraviolet light play a role in sun damage: UVA and UVB. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply, and triggers the freckles and brown spots we see with age; it is released in high concentrations in tanning booths. UVB penetrates only the top layers of the skin and leads to sunburns. Both forms of ultraviolet light contribute to the development of cataracts.

Chemotherapy
Mohs Surgery is a specialized technique for removing certain types of skin cancers. It is named after Dr. Frederic Mohs, who invented the procedure in the 1930’s. This technique provides patients with the highest chance of cure for skin cancers, higher than standard excision, radiation or any topical chemotherapy medications. Today, this state-of-the-art method has been modified and refined to become the gold standard of treatment for many skin cancers of the head and neck. During this procedure, the healthy skin is preserved facilitating a more elegant reconstruction resulting in a smaller scar. When performed by a fellowship trained Mohs surgeon, the cure rates are 98% for most common skin cancers.

Wound Care
You should expect to wear a permanent bandage for at least 2 days, and up to 7 days, following your surgery. You should not get this bandage wet. The exact details of your bandage and wound care will be addressed with you on the day of your surgery.
Joint Replacement
Please call our office if you have an artificial heart valve, joint replacement, organ transplant, or heart murmur. You may need to take an antibiotic before your surgery.
Mohs Surgery
Mohs surgery is performed by a specially trained team that includes dermatologic surgeon, several surgical assistants and laboratory technician who prepared the tissue for microscopic examination. Our experienced office personnel are also integral members of the team and can answer a lot of your questions regarding how to prepare for the procedure. You will meet the entire team at the time of your consultation and the day of surgery.
Reconstructive Surgery
A fellowship trained Mohs surgeon has obtained additional training in skin cancer surgery, pathology, facial and complex regional reconstructive surgery. It is important for you to choose a Mohs surgeon that has done a fellowship approved by the prestigious American College of Mohs Surgery.

Skin Cancer
The Mohs technique is a specialized surgical procedure that offers the highest cure rate of any treatment for skin cancer, while preserving the greatest amount of normal tissue. Pioneered by Dr. Frederick Mohs, it differs from traditional surgical methods by examining 100% of the undersurface and edges of the cancerous tissue at the time of removal. Traditional surgical techniques are not able to examine 100% of the tissue, resulting in possible extensions of the tumor going undetected.
Dermatology
Bay Area Skin Cancer Surgery and Dermatology is located at 702 Manatee Avenue West in Bradenton. The entrance, as well as parking, is located behind the building. Public transportation is available via MCAT bus # 3.
Lesions
If the lesion is on your body (not face or scalp), you will be unable to get the area wet for 48 hours after surgery, and you will have to avoid prolonged water exposure (swimming, bathing) and strenuous activities for 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. Lesions on the lower leg may require leg elevation for several days to weeks after surgery; you may also need to wear medical grade compression support stockings during this time.
