There is, in fact, a difference between allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Allergic rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal passages brought on by exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental allergens in those genetically predisposed to have allergies. Chronic sinusitis refers to thickening and inflammation of the sinus walls and is often caused by allergic rhinitis. When sinus drainage passages become clogged, infection may occur.

Emergency Care
An asthma action plan gives you guidance on what medications to take, avoiding asthma triggers, responding to symptoms and seeking emergency care. This plan also allows you to monitor your level of asthma control, allowing an asthma specialist to make changes as needed. The goal of your asthma action plan is to control your symptoms using the least amount of medicine needed. To do this, you may be required to use a device called a “peak flow meter” that measures how well your lungs are operating. This device helps you and your doctor monitor the effectiveness of the medication and may help you avoid an asthma emergency.

Dr. Michael Mardiney III is board certified in Allergy and Clinical Immunology and has been at Mardiney® Centers since 1996 with over 20 years of clinical experience in the fields of allergic and immunologic diseases. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Mathematics from Hamilton College and cum laude from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Washington University School of Medicine and performed his research fellowship at the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, earning the rank Lieutenant Commander as member of the United States Public Health Service.

Internal Medicine
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Michael Mardiney Jr. earned a medical degree from the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry in 1960, before studying internal medicine at the State University of New York’s Downstate Medical Center in Kings County Hospital Center. Later on in his career, he joined the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD – and did research on human lymphocytes and cancer immunology. In 1967, he was appointed head of a section at the Baltimore Cancer Research Center of the National Cancer Institute. He later founded Mardiney Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Centers in 1977 with its first location in Howard County, MD.
