Bladder Cancer
Blood in the urine: This is referred to as hematuria and can actually be seen in the urine or diagnosed with a microscopic analysis of a urine sample and is an absolute reason to see a urologist. Possible causes of hematuria are bladder cancer, kidney cancer, severe urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney stones, prostate cancer, or diseases inherent in kidney tissue. Hematuria can occur intermittently even if there is a serious cause for it; therefore, blood in the urine one time is enough to see a urologist.

Kidney Cancer
Kidney mass: A mass found on the kidney with an ultrasound or CAT scan must be further evaluated by a urologist. Cure rates from kidney cancer are very high if found at early stages.
Kidney Stones
Urinary tract stones or urolithiasis: Urologists specialize in determining if a painful stone will pass out the body with natural process or if surgery must be performed. Tumor markers: substance produced by cancer cells and sometimes normal cells. They are not very useful for cancer screening because other body tissues not related to a cancer can produce the substance. But tumor markers may be very useful in monitoring for response to treatment when a cancer is diagnosed or for a recurrence. Tumor markers include CA 125 (ovarian cancer), CEA (GI tract cancers), and PSA (prostate cancer).

Lung Cancer
Since Roentgen first discovered x-rays more than 100 years ago they have been an integral part of our understanding of the body. X-rays are useful for visualizing bony structures as well as some soft tissue and can be used to diagnose everything from fractures to lung cancer. In comparison to other ways to identify pathologies (such as surgical exploration), x-rays are considered to be minimally invasive.

Ultrasound
IUI’s ultrasound modality offers patients a versatile system for abdominal, nerve, vascular, cardiac, venous access, pelvic, and superficial imaging. Our advanced ultrasound system offers physicians striking image quality with sharp contrast resolution and clear tissue delineation to assist in accurate as well as efficient diagnosis.
MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): a method of taking pictures of the inside of the body. Instead of using x-rays, MRI uses a powerful magnet to send radio waves through the body. The images appear on a computer screen as well as on film. Like x-rays, the procedure is physically painless, but some people may feel confined inside the MRI machine.
Radiology
Recently, there has been a great deal of media coverage concerning radiation doses received during CT imaging. At IUI we strive to always keep patient doses under the American College of Radiology’s recommended dosage levels. The dose you receive during your imaging will be recorded in your medical record. Our most effective means of limiting patient radiation exposure is by providing experienced technologists who are credentialed through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and understand the importance of dosage levels.
X-Rays
Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine scan: ( ): a method for localizing diseases of internal organs such as the brain, liver, or bone. Small amounts of a radioactive substance (isotope) are injected into the bloodstream. The isotope collects in certain organs and a special camera called scintillation camera is used to produce an image of the organ and detect areas of disease.
Computed Tomography
CT or Computed Tomography has been an invaluable part of medical imaging since the 1970’s. The CT scanner resembles a large doughnut and is open on both ends (image to the right). Like radiography, CT uses x-rays to produce images; it does not use magnetism like an MRI.
Chemotherapy
Anorexia: (an-uh- rek -see-uh): loss of appetite; may be caused by either the cancer itself or as a side effect of treatments such as chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy
Idaho Urologic Institute has integrated the latest in Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guidance Radiation Therapy (IGRT), 3D Conformal Planning and SpaceOAR with our linear accelerator equipment from Varian Medical Systems. These advanced treatments minimize the risk of damage to healthy surrounding tissue.

Vasectomy
VASOVASOSTOMY: A vasovasostomy is a surgical procedure in which the effects of a vasectomy (male sterilization) are reversed. During a vasectomy, the vasa deferentia, which are ducts that carry sperm from the testicles to the seminal vesicles, are cut, tied, cauterized (burned or seared), or otherwise interrupted. A vasovasostomy creates an opening between the separated ends of each vas deferens so that the sperm may enter the semen before ejaculation.
