Our standard finished flooring is 1×12-inch pine, installed over a sub-floor of 3/4-inch, 4×8-foot plywood decking. Other sub-flooring, finished flooring or floor coverings are optional. Loft floors are 2×6-inch tongue and groove pine, creating an exposed beam, V-grooved ceiling for the rooms below.

Interior ceilings, porch ceilings and partition walls are paneled with either 1×6-inch, 1×8-inch, or 1×12-inch V-grooved, tongue and groove white pine boards. Optional woods or drywall may be substituted in selected areas.

Before our job is done, the driveway is graveled, plants native to the area are placed around the house and mulched with pine bark or pine straw, and a split rail accent fence is built. Each of these landscaping features are included in the package price of a Sisson Company home site and home.
Fencing
We believe anyone who takes the time to hike this trail will be inspired by the wide diversityof natural and man-made landscape architecture. Immediately after elaving the plaque com memorating the Griffins and Thrashers, one will be awed by the abundance of water including lakes, springs, branches, ponds, and cascading waterfalls. You will pass mammoth rock outcroppings, old grwoth trees, cabins and split rail fences. Your walk will take you through managed wildlife areas, past magnificent rhododendrons, montain laurel, flame azaleas, fern fields and wildflower plains including orchids and jack-in-the-pulpits. At different seasons of the year you’ll be amazed by summer gold finches, pure blue skies, views of Rich and Cohutta Mountain ranges, winter snow, solitude and healing. This is why you should take the time to enjoy the Griffin-Thrasher experience.
Driveways
Buying unimproved land can be a financially risky proposition if all potential cost factors are not identified prior to the purchase. Connecting utility lines, obtaining a potable water source, installing a septic system, grading a driveway and building site add up to a potentially significant expense. In many instances, the total cost of these items may exceed the price paid for the land.
Walkways
There is no limit to the special touches we can add to a Sisson Company home. Use our basic plans — and your imagination — to create a truly one-of-a-kind getaway. Custom kitchens, expanded decks and porches, stone walkways, whirlpool baths, oak floors, and fixed glass are just an example of the enticing extras which are available. It will be our pleasure to assist you in the selection of the perfect plan, materials, and optional features to suit your wishes.

Window Installation/Replacement
A variety of standard exterior doors, including cross buck, French and raised panel, may be selected. Standard interior doors are pine raised-panel, but other types of doors are optional.
Decks
Building site soil is pre-treated to eradicate in-ground termite infestations. A metal flashing termite shield goes on top of block and poured foundations. All decks, deck supports, and first-floor framing plates are of treated lumber.
Siding
Sisson, Dupont & Carder log siding is milled to match all of our log profiles. For stacked log construction, we typically use matching siding for gable ends and dormers, but it’s also a fine choice for use on conventionally-framed structures, and when accented by our log corner insert pieces, creates a convincing log home look.
Porches
Decks and covered porches are framed with 2×8-inch pressure-treated lumber, on 16-inch centers. Ground supports are 6×6-inch treated posts, and 1×6-inch treated decking boards are used. Porch roof support posts and rafters typically match the beams employed indoors. A selection of standard porch and deck railing designs are offered.
Residential Roof Repair
Our standard roofing is UL-listed, Class A 3-tab asphalt shingles, available in a choice of colors. Optional galvanized steel roofing—a “tin” roof—is available plain, or in an array of baked-enamel colors. Asphalt shingles are applied over 7/16-inch, 4×8-foot OSB decking sheets; galvanized steel over 7/16-inch. A rain gutter with downspout is provided along one side typically the uphill side of the home, and additional lengths are available.
Residential Roof Replacement/Installation
Most of our homes are of an “open” plan design, with exposed rafters and loft supports of 4×6-inch to 4×10-inch white pine beams. These beams are located on 24-inch centers, depending upon the plan. The roofing system is framed above the rafters with 2x8s.

Insulation
Log Homes also offer help on your heating and cooling with the benefits of thermal mass. The mass of the wood timbers absorbs the heat in the home once it is heated and holds coolness once the home is cool. Unlike fiberglass insulation the R-value of white pine wood increases with rising and lowering temperatures.
Masonry
Our homes are built on a concrete block or poured wall and pier foundation with poured concrete footings, allowing a minimum 24-inch crawl space. All plumbing is contained within the enclosed area, and an access door is provided. A stone veneer on two exposed sides of the block foundation, or masonry “stucco” covering three sides, is standard. All support piers are 6×6-inch, pressure-treated timbers.
Caulking
A log home invokes a carefree lifestyle. It is difficult to imagine someone in the market for a log home not expecting to “kick-back” a bit in a rustic setting that requires no fuss or bother. Log homes demand little of their owners. This should come as no surprise when one considers that there are standing log homes which have not been stained, sealed or painted in over one hundred years. If you are happy with the natural gray appearance of weathered wood, simply apply an occasional coating of water sealer or preservative, particularly in areas where the effects of extreme exposure are evident. Interior log walls left in their natural state require no maintenance whatsoever. A colored exterior finish should be renewed no more often than typical wood siding, and caulking requirements are generally consistent with a home of conventional construction.
