Dr. Crum currently sees behavior consults for both dogs and cats. After evaluation, she will discuss appropriate medications (when indicated), as well as design an individualized behavior modification plan to best help your pet.
Nutritional Counseling
We feel it is important that our patients benefit from a balanced diet and take the role of educating our clients about food purchases very seriously. Some pets require special diets that may or may not require purchase through our office. Diet is especially important for us to discuss because many people think “food is love”…leading to many obese cats and dogs with a myriad of diseases like diabetes and arthritis!
Comprehensive Examination
Behavior Consults are scheduled at our office with Dr. Tiffani Crum and our trainer, Holly. These appointments are geared toward animals that have complicated behavior issues (aggression, phobias, anxieties, etc.). The behavior consult includes a full physical exam to rule out any medical causes for the behavior. A complete behavior observation and evaluation. Recommendations for any further medical testing or medications. A detailed written behavior modification plan with specific recommendations for rehabilitation. Consult with our trainer to help implement any training recommendations. Follow up support via phone calls and email after the appointment. Behavior Consults are $140 for the entire appointment.

Although you should be looking at and brushing your pet’s teeth daily…they will eventually, just like humans…need a professional teeth cleaning. Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining the integrity of the teeth, gums and your pet’s overall health. Periodontal disease can lead to heart and kidney disease! Dental cleanings are performed in a dedicated dentistry suite where, while under anesthesia, patients get a thorough review of their oral cavity. The teeth are then hand-scaled and scaled with an ultrasonic cleaning tool. Each tooth is checked individually for any sizeable “pockets” along the gum line which may lead to underlying cavities. The dental technician then polishes the teeth (just like human dental hygienists) to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque build-up. A fluoride treatment is then applied to help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.

Full mouth dental radiographs are taken on every patient. The dental technician then polishes the teeth (just like human dental hygienists) to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque build-up. A fluoride treatment is then applied to help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.

Dental Surgery
It is not possible to thoroughly evaluate the teeth and gums until your pet is anesthetized. Each tooth must be evaluated before a decision is made as to the best course of treatment. The teeth are cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar. After that a dental probe is used to check around each tooth. If problems are found then dental x-rays may be needed to determine the extent of the problem. Any teeth that are fractured or have missing enamel may need to be extracted (here), or need root canal therapy done elsewhere at a later time. In addition, any tooth that is loose or where the bone around the tooth roots has been lost from periodontal disease should be extracted. Cats develop cavity-like lesions at or below the gum line and the only treatment for these painful teeth is extraction. After the oral examination and possible x-rays the doctor or technician can call you (as indicated below) about any problems found and discuss the options for whatever further oral surgery is indicated. The oral surgery may be able to be done at this time or scheduled for another date. It is more economical to complete all needed dental procedures during the initial anesthetic session rather than schedule a separate procedure at another time.

Declawing

We offer advanced surgery techniques and state-of-the-art monitoring technology. All patients are carefully pre-anesthetic screened and then anesthesia type, quantity and rates are specifically tailored to your pet’s needs. Surgical services and facilities include: a dedicated surgery suite where all sterile surgery procedures are performed, 2 highly trained technicians to care for and monitor your pet’s progress, a heated surgery table, heated recovery cages (lots of large, soft blankies:), advanced sterilization techniques via 2 steam pressurized autoclaves, ECG, oxygen saturation and blood pressure monitoring.

Laboratory Services
We strive to prevent illness whenever possible. The time and effort invested in our Wellness program has rewards for both pets and owners. Specific attributes of preventative care include: Comprehensive Annual/Bi-Annual Physical Examinations, Intestinal/Blood Parasite Testing, Heartworm Prevention/Flea Control Medications, Patient-Specific Vaccination Protocols, Spaying/Neutering; and many other specialized blood tests for all patients and life stages.
X-Ray
Our clinic is proud to offer in-house digital radiography (x-ray) with new state-of-the-art equipment. No referrals necessary, we can take x-rays on-site and have clear pictures instantly. X-rays help our veterinarians evaluate musculo-skeletal, cardiovascular pulmonary, gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary systems.
Dental Radiology
Our team is committed to educating our clients regarding how to keep your pets healthy year round, with good nutrition and exercise. Valley Veterinary Service, Inc. stays on top of the latest advances in veterinary technology (including digital dental x-ray, digital full-size x-ray and onsite ultrasound machine) and above all, remembers that all animals and pets need to be treated with loving care in every check-up, procedure, or surgery.
Microchipping
Microchips have helped reunite thousands of pets with their families. Shelters do their very best to locate owners, but if your pet has no form of identification, there’s not much they can do. A tiny microchip that contains a personal, one-of-a-kind identification number distinguishes your pet as a special member of your family. Once your pet is microchipped, the chip number is immediately registered with the database and your information. When your lost pet is found, you, your veterinarian or designated alternate will be notified!

Boarding
Sarah joined our team in January 2020 as a Veterinary Assistant. She graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Communications. Sarah has over 8 years of experience in companion animal husbandry starting with pet sitting initially and developing grooming and boarding skills through various jobs. She also has over 3 years of exotic animal husbandry experience working with all kinds of wild animals! Sarah is currently working through an online Certified Veterinary Technician Program to become a Certified Veterinary Technician. In her free time Sarah enjoys being outdoors and snuggling up with her Golden Retriever, Bentley, Dachshund, Mandy, and Pit Bull, Enzo.
